DESCRIPTION:
A "retired" demon who has assumed human form. He uses his powers to explore the mysteries of the human soul in the form of those that oppose evil, and in the evil that exists (and why it 'does' evil in the first place). His human appearance is not a natural ability, and so those sensitive to the magical arts can easily pierce his disguise. This has drawn some unwanted attention in the past, so Victor is wary about whom he allows into his secrets.

Victor's human disguise is an extraordinarily handsome man. That form he wears was chosen by Janus when they first met, and he renewed it for more than 25 years.

Recent events have forced him to adopt a new guise. Again, he has chose an extraordinarily handsome man. This form has some different properties (see below) than his last disguise but it is similar in most ways.

His demonic form is about 9 feet tall with horns that take his total height over 10 feet. His overall colour is green with darker and lighter "freckles" and a yellowish slime that oozes from tiny pores on his chitinous armour. Spike protrude from his joints and he has sharp talons on his hands and feet, and weighs about 400 lbs. (even when in disguise).

(Victor is played by Denzel Washington)

BACKGROUND:
Vrithetek was created on the dimension of G'rnatha as a battle fiend. The battle fiends are hive-minded combat drones designed to wage endless war across the cosmos. They are controlled by the Monitors. The monitors watch for signs of defectives (self-willed) drones, and destroy them.

Vrithetek knew he was a defective from the beginning. He carefully hid his self-mindedness from the monitors for an unknown period of time (time runs differently in other planes). When he was finally discovered, he fled to the Shrine of Ghortab. Ghortab was the "creator" who designed both the monitors and battle fiends. He was worshipped as a god on G'rnatha.

The shrine had become sort of a sanctuary for the defectives who clustered around the entrance to the shrine, hoping to gain entry. Only a very few were allowed in by the shrine (it being self aware and having its own criteria for selecting who might enter).

Vrithetek was allowed entry. Inside the stone tablets that carried the words of Ghortab were displayed for those privileged to enter. One stone in particular spoke audibly to Vrithitek. It said:

Quote:
Time will come when you will need more than life. Then those days of existence will pale with the desire for more than a creator can give. A soul will give you power. A pure soul will take you higher than an impure soul. An impure soul is worse than existence. Only one thing can free the impure soul from its torture.

Victor stole the stone from the shrine and escaped from G'rnatha using an abandoned transport ring (crystalline rings that are used to teleport the battle fiends to wars) to flee to Earth where he arrived in 50 BC in Mesopotamia.

Vrithetek initially interpreted the stone as meaning he should feed on the pure souls of the innocent. He gained tremendous power and a fearsome reputation.

In 1170, Vrithetek was seeking to feed on the souls of a group of Crusaders in Jerusalem. He was interested to see if their souls were still pure after the atrocities they had committed for their God. He found them opening the Nether Arch using the Cloch Cosan.

They were seeking to open a portal to Heaven to bring about the Second Coming of Christ. Victor fed on their souls and entered the arch. Inside the heavenly power 'read' Vrithitek and granted his wish. He gave him a soul of his own.

Over the centuries, Vrithitek took less and less pleasure from from the consumption of souls and instead became more and more guilty over the many thousands of deaths he had caused.

The last thousand years have been the worst. Vrithetek consumed his last innocent on a battlefield in Turkey in the 14th century and has not touched one since (not hasn't wanted one...just hasn't taken one). Shortly after that he used a ritual of transformation to assume a human form. The ritual (which he cannot perform himself, but must have performed on him) periodically needs to be renewed. So "Victor" (the name he invariably chooses) has changed many times in the past 500 years to preserve his anonymity.

Victor has had many encounters with great figures of history. He has discussed at length the nature of the soul with some of the finest philosophers of the last 1000 years. He has consulted with wizards and witches of the highest calibre looking for answers into the nature of the soul. And so he has a vast store of knowledge at his mental fingertips.

His journey into the human soul has just started (as far as he is concerned) and he is no clues to discovering the difference between the souls of those considered "good" and those considered "evil". This troubles him. He doesn't consider himself evil, yet he is sure that if someone were to discover his past he would be considered evil. Is his soul an evil soul or a good one?

Victor knows what a "Slayer" is (and in the 17th century had to change his identity because one was hunting him). He tends to avoid them. He avoids demon hunters as well. But there are those that seek knowledge about demons, undead, and historical figures who have found him and his unique perspective on the last two millennia. So he does encounter them from time to time.

Victor welcomes these contacts. They are invariably polarised "good" or "evil" rather than some grey in-between. He provides a service in exchange for an "examination". An embarrassing affair (for the examinee) involving probes and samples and usually a lot of nudity. Victor (while male in his current disguise) is not sexually motivated and so sees little to be embarrassed about.

Victor has amassed a sizeable personal fortune by trading antiquities he has cached of the centuries. This allows him to be fairly mobile moving from place to place before his identity is uncovered.

POWERS/ABILITIES:
Victor has a few demonic powers: He can read a person's soul. This is rarely definitive but can indicate a prevalence of good or evil in a personality at that moment.

Victor has heightened senses (like most demons). His hearing, eyesight, and sense of smell are superior (by an order of magnitude) than humans.

Victor can capture souls. As they depart the body he can hold them as long as he likes in his hand (so it isn't really convenient). He often does this as people die to examine their essence. He then releases it to its ultimate journey.

Victor can also "merge" with other beings. During this process his body enters an "unstable" molecular state and disappears. While in this merged state his demonic essence can enhance the natural abilities (or add new ones) to the host. His demonic nature has more control when he is in a merged state. This ability has been demonstrated to work independently of Victor's will. What other of his abilities can operate autonomously is unknown.

Victor's body has amazing regenerative powers. He can regrow severed limbs or reattach them if the limb is intact. He can survive beheading or being crushed. The process does take time, however, and it can take several weeks for his to recover from massive injury. In cases where his body cannot repair damaged parts, it just grows new ones and the old ones are shed.

ITEMS:

Elixir ~
Victor has an elixir: The elixir was brewed for him the last time he had his disguise renewed. It is a transformation potion that will last for 24 hours (long enough to get his spell renewed). It is brewed for demon physiology so may have unpredictable effects on humans.

The Stone of Ghortab ~
Victor has a stone from the Shrine of Ghortab (a famous place of faith in his dimension) it may or may not have powers, or significance here. Victor keeps it heard it speak audibly to him. He believes that it has no intrinsic value but that its rune-carved surface holds answers for him about the nature of his soul. The fact that it is a 2-foot by 3 foot slab with arcane markings makes it very obvious. It has never spoken audibly since that first time.

Knowledge ~
Victor has his knowledge: As mentioned above he has 2000 years of experience in human history. The last 1000 of which have been spent in the company of some great minds. This includes knowledge of specific sources of information. Caches of relics and items of mystical power. The resting places of famous (or infamous) figures in history. When it comes to magic, his knowledge is spotty (being unable to do magic himself). But he might know the name of a sorcerer who might. Victor's knowledge is his greatest possession.

Glamours ~
Victor wears a glamour. His last one was cast by the Wisewoman, it showed signs of emotions that Victor felt, it sweated when he exerted himself. It displayed his injuries as human equivalents. It adjusted proportions to make it appear as if a normal human rather than a huge G'rnathan Battle Fiend was interacting with things around him. It even demonstrated the ability to simulate sexual arousal and pleasure.

His newest glamour was cast by Catherine Wiccham and has many of the same properties. The main differences are the Glamour counters for Victor's enormous weight. It resizes the appearance of his clothing but not the clothing itself (necessitating his clothing be tailored to fit his 9' tall frame). The glamour appears to be less emotive than the last one and to people familiar with Victor's "old" face may find this one somewhat wooden.
