I have gotten a few avatars recently that were a little larger than the measely 80 x 80 that is the default setting. So, I played around and discovered that you can change the size.
So Starting Immediately, Avatars are now 128 x 128 maximum size.
I have also implemented the "gallery" feature for Avatars, and created a gallery for each character that has a gallery online. So feel free to change your avatar to suit your mood! But be aware, it will change all the appearances of your avatar throughour the site...

I've gotta say Dave - absolutely LOVE the avatar gallery, if for nothing else than a bit of a change on the game board it is wonderful to be able to just change your avatar at the drop of a hat!

Don't get to used to it. She changes that picture daily (sometimes I suspect hourly in unison with her mood-swings :)). And once you change your pic, it changes it throughout the boards. So by this time tomorrow, your post won't make sense. We'll have a totally new, sexy Kate.
I get all sorts of sleepy-time material from her pics. Er....I have said too much. . ..:)

Yeah i change my avatar alot - but with 40 to choose from you would too!! Yeah i am avatar mad but i'm glad to say i'm not the only one anymore!!
The easiest way to get your avatars up is to e-mail them to Dave, he'll set up a charcter gallery if you want one (like those seen on the Home Page) and also any avatars you want too.
Remember avatars have to be 128x128 pixles max.

i try to limit myself to one change every week. *grin* that way, i make my existing batch of avatars last a looong time without repeats... i think dave might go nuts if i mail him anymore pix. :oops: i've been a little extreme with them too... hee hee... *big hugs to dave for being so patient so far*

No, Heather. It's GOOD that you have one only pic. Sure, Jade and Kate are WOWing us with how sexy they can be, but your avatar is consistent, like an old shoe, like someone who will stick with you through thick and thin, someone who you don't mind standing up on a date, someone whose sister you wouldn't mind dating, someone who will mow the lawn while you sit and swing on the hammock with the lemonade she made for you. :wink:

Speaking of Brendan Fraser, Bedazzled happens to be on HBO. It just came on without my say-so. Does anyone else find that this game has consumed their life?

Well, Sid, as much as it would be fitting for me to have switched your avatar pic, I'm afraid I'm innocent of all charges....
I know Dave was doing some gallery work last night, so possibly the avatar pic you were using has been orphaned - lost its link or something. When I see him next I'll ask him to check it out for you.
Not that you deserve to get your old pic back, of course. But I'm not one to hold a grudge. For longer than a decade or two, anyway.... :wink:

There seems to be some confusion about avatars, galleries, thumbnails, and profiles...so here is a quick guide to the board terminology:
The BOARD is the LA By Night gameboard. Information from the Board is supported by the SITE which is where news, profiles, and background info is presented to the public.
The BOARD is divided into sections. Each section has a number of forums. The Forums consists of Topics and the replies to those topics. There are a couple of special forums.
Character Descriptions is a forum where you can post your character as a topic and post replies to your character "topic" and these will be visible on the SITE from your Character Profile Page.
If you send me pictures I build a character gallery for your character and will link it to your character description. (as well as on the SITE).
As a player you also have a PLAYER PROFILE. You can access this from the Profile link at the top of the game board pages. There you can change your information (including your avatar). Each character who has a Gallery ALSO has an avatar gallery.
Press the "show gallery" button to show the gallery and use the "Category" drop down menu to select your character name. You will see the avatars there for you to choose from. Click the dot beneath the picture you want. Click SAVE. and SAVE your profile. Instant change of avatar.
When you upload an avatar or "cross link" one you will need to delete the old avatar sometimes to get the new one to take.
Hope this little primer helps when having discussions...when you have a character gallery and an avatar gallery and they are in different places, it CAN cause confusion.

i was just wondering... how do we go about linking to an off-site avatar or uploading an avatar from a url?
we're given the options to do so under the
section but every time i try to do either, my avatars don't come up. (i get that x thingie instead...)
dave - does something have to be enabled or is there a special command that needs to be typed before this works? i just thought that if we could link or upload avatars ourselves, we wouldn't have to bother u every time we want to update or add to our gallery of images. :oops:

somehow, dave - being the genius that he is :wink: - managed to teach me how to go about uploading my avatar from another site. now i don't hafta bother him every time i want a new batch of avatars to use. *beams*
if u guys wanna do it too, get a web account with geocities. (if u already have a yahoo account, u've automatically got a geocities one too...) upload all ur avatar jpeg files to the account using their...
then go to ur profile page and fill in the bit that says and type in the location of your image then click ... for example...
http://www.geocities.com/ur_account_name/ur_file_name.jpg
note: this function's awfully picky about the size of ur files and it won't work if ur avatar is ever-so-sliiiiiightly bigger than 12kb. i had to resize all my images again so that they're about 11kb (just to play on the safe side). another minus point is that the images u upload from a url aren't gonna be in ur avatar gallery on the game board so u have to find a way to keep urself in the know of which file is which. :?
the good thing is, people like lou and myself can have humongous selections of avatars to choose from now without feeling terrible each time we go on one of our avatar surfing sprees. :oops:

one more thing i forgot to mention...
for some people... every time u change ur avatar and upload another one from ur storage site, u might have to click the button before the latest pix chosen will be reflected on ur posts.
i'm no computer expert so i'm not too sure why that happens... :roll: anyone with the answer?

Strangely enough I am :wink:
When you computer loads an avatar it has a pointer on the page (called a URI) that tells it where the current avatar is loaded. That URI is looked up each time you load a page. BUt if the page has not changed then your browser looks in its cache for the page and renders it from there (that speeds up browsing).
What this means is that the old URI (before you changed your avatar) is showing.
So, if you want it to load the page from the 'Net and not from your cache you refresh. That forces your browser to load from the server and not your cache so you get a fresh page (and a different URI).

I tried this and I'm a little confused, I can't seem to actually UPLOAD an avatar from a URL, however i can LINK to an off-site avatar - but this is scatty at best and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't - quite often it works for a short while then i get that annoying 'X' grrr...
I tried hitting refresh when I want to change my avatar...
What am I doing wrong??
I am also 'no computer expert' so urm, in idiot terms please! :D

it could be the site u're uploading from doesn't allow linking... so make sure u use the correct bit under ur profile that says, not the one that simply links it.
and make sure u get the address right. for example, if ur user id with geocities is johnsmith and your file name is avatar.jpg then the url u should be uploading from is:
http://www.geocities.com/johnsmith/avatar.jpg
another reason could be that u've used up ur allocated data transfer for the day. geocities has a limit of 5mb i think? so if u've been uploading lots of files to ur account, u might have reached that limit and all transfers will have to be postponed to the following day.
that's my 2 cents worth... :roll: not much i know but i can't think of any other reasons to your problem, sorry lou... i've tried and tested about 20 of my own avatars that i uploaded to my geocities account and they all work fine...

Becasue it doesn't work, I disabled the "Link to Offsite Avatar" do only the "upload from a URL" works.
Just so people don't consider April's instructions confusing when they don't see the second option.

Currently...No. However there are any number of free photo galleriy sites online that will allow you to upload fiiles to them (including GeoCities). You can upload to your geocities page, then use LaByNight to grab it from GeoCities.
RIght now that the best I can do.
Maybe soon I will get the time to go in and muck around and make a real upload file function. But then again maybe pigs will fly ;)
Off-Site Avatars
Okay, I know we were having problems linking to off-site avatars before, particularly with Geocities accounts. Well, finally figured out the problem. Geocities does not allow linking to pictures - and it determines what is a picture by the extention. All you have to do is rename the avatar to a .txt file and you can link. That is *all* you have to change - so just rename avatar.jpg to avatar.txt.
Yes, this does sound a little wierd, but it actually does work.

Weird. When I posted those ultra-sexy pictures of myself and Kristen, I was using Geocities without any trouble.

Here is why it works for avatars and not for the IMG tags...
When you pass the URL for the Avatar to the bulletin board it copies it to the local server for it to use. It's not really linked.
When you put the IMG tag into a post it makes a link to the picture wherever it is located...so it IS linked.
Geocities does not allow linking to its pictures, but it WILL allow you to copy them.
If you go to Geocities and VIEW the pictures from whatever site...then they are in your Internet Cache, so when you go to LABN you see the pictures. Later, when the pix are flushed from your cashe naturally the links on LABN are broken.
I think that ADAM's workaround should make it work correctly. BUT upload your picture FIRST, then rename it to "something.txt" in the geocities file manager.
then you can link to it as [img ] http//www.geocities.com/yadda/yadda/something.txt [ /img]

One final note, creating more work for Dave.
At the moment, this only works on Mythic. It won't work with "upload avatar from URL," only with "link to off-site avatar." So we need him to turn that option back on. :)
