The Society of Ulle is a "hunters society" formed in the 15th century by a group of bounty hunters working for the Spanish Inquisition. in the course of thier investigations they uncovered the reality of supernatural beings walking among humanity. Calling themselves the Brotherhood of Ulle after their leader Ulle Fericksen they formed a loose alliance of hunters whose prey consists of exclusively supernatural prey.

The Society (as it later bcame to be known) maintains a headquarters in the Swiss village of Meiringen (the site of Reichebach Falls) where they operate a museum of mythic creatures including a stuffed griffen and a gallery of famous hunters.

The members of the Society are secretive and are organized in a system similar to a feudal order. The top of this heirarcy is the Grand Huntmaster, followed in order by Huntmaster Knight, Huntmaster, Hunter Emeritus, Hunter, and Squire.

There is a Huntmaster Knight for every country (some Huntmaster Knights have multiple counties under their jurisdiction). Most major areas of supernatural activity have a Huntmaster (Sorrow is the Huntmaster for LA), and Hunter Emeritus is a honorary title for a retired Huntmaster.

All other members of the Society are unaffiliated with any geographic area. They roam where the 'game' is and it is considered a formality to request permission from a huntmaster (or Huntmaster Knight) before hunting in any given area.

Members are recruited as Squires under a Hunter (or any ranking member of the Society) and are granted a provisional status within the Society.

The Society expects each member to swear on oath to the Society that covers the following provisions:

    - No Member will hunt another member of the Society whether supernatural or not. (NOTE: Sorrow is currently the only member of the Society who is considered 'supernatural') - Any reasonable request for aid must be granted to another member. (This can include money, sanctuary, weapons, revenge, or assistance)
    - Permission must be obtained before hunting in an Huntmaster's territory (this is largely fa formality these days but some Huntmaster's are more strict about it than others)
    - A Huntmaster may close his area from all hunts. This is known as "Interdiction". Lifting of an interdiction is at the discretion of the Huntmaster or his direct Superior. (NOTE: Currently there are interdictions on Washington, DC; Hamburg, Germany; Transylvania; Jerusalem; and Bankok, Thailand)
    - Any act that results in the death of another Hunter may be considered an act of betrayal by the Society. Betrayers are entitled to a hearing of Huntmasters of equal or higher rank to determine their status. (The Grand Huntmaster has final say in all hearings.)
    - There is only one punishment for betrayal...you are hunted by those you have betrayed (the entire Society)

While the Society of Ulle is not a secret society, it is secretive. Hunters do not easily share the business of the Society with strangers. The Society of Ulle is one of a number of Hunter-type societies in the world, some of them more just than others (i.e. Order of Turaka, Knights of Byzantium).
