Hardly worth me adding my two cents' worth at this stage, but I also give it the thumbs up. I think a brief appearance by The Chosen One as an npc would give Alice a chance to get a really good sub-plot happening with Jess. I wouldn't like to see a Slayer as a permanent game character, 'cause I feel it would be too unbalancing, but the two week time-span sounds about right.

And let's face it, there's no such thing as too much angst. :)

I noticed Jess has a Slayer...and I wanted to be clear about this before the speculation gets out of hand...

Ellie is not the "official" slayer, but a "Slayer Potential". The current slayer has still not been found. There is a "Mark of the Slayer", a mole at the back of the neck, that (I assume) Jess has as well since she was trained as a Slayer Potential. Many girls are born with the potential, but few ever actually are called.

Alice has hinted at having Ellie be called in the course of season 2 (and have a very short career as Slayer...about 2 weeks I estimate). Would this make anyone upset? Does anyone mind having this happen?

My personal feelings on the matter are neutral. I'd like to see Jess' "Watcher Diary" and of course losing one's ward makes for excellent role-playing angst.

Lets hear your opinions.

I've also talked to Alice about the slayer in waiting. I think it's a great idea. I know we've never really wanted a focal character such as The Slayer and i wouldn't be comfortable with a PC playing in this role - but that's the beauty of an NPC being The Slayer - limited shelf life.

I also think it would be an excellent story line for Jess - plus it is her destiny to train 'The Chosen One' even if she doesn't live very long.

Since I haven't done this long, I don't understand the concept that a slayer would unbalance things. Also, forgive me if I ask why only two weeks? Seems an awful short time for a trained warrior. Maybe I've watched Buffy too long and have become entrenched in the hero-worship syndrome.

(Perhaps this belongs in the Things I Should Know But Don't post.)

It was more the feeling that a Slayer would become the focal point for the game in the same way that BtVS is centred on Buffy. Obviously we don't really want this because this is a game of equals, and no one PC is any more important than the next.

I don't see why Ellie should only be allowed a shelf life of two weeks specifically although i don't really see a place in the game for a Slayer long term based on what I've said previously. But concidering how slow time passes in-season two weeks could take a couple of months to cover.

I think the angst would be more profound if Ellie were to die in the midst of one of the big battles - like fighting Valerian or Mariah. I don't think her existance should just be a flicker, I'd like to see her go out in a big ol' explosion!!

love the slayer and valerian idea... he's done in a couple in the past. this would just be another feather in daddy's cap.

sorry that valerian's been so quiet the last couple of months... i've really haven't had the time to do a post that covers his whereabouts etc etc etc... i'll get to that soon.

I'm thinking along the lines of Louis...bring her in, and of course get her out, maybe in battle.

This shouldn't be done mindlessly. She is the slayer, and she should touch the lives of all the characters before she goes. Her death should be meaningful. Her contribution should leave echoes in the overall story. She should do what our characters cannot, and I would like to see future storylines stemming from her that could not have existed had she not come to L.A.

This will take longer than two weeks.

Well, the idea of the two week timespan was actually related to her time as a Slayer once called. I wasn't referring to her total time in the game.

Her first appearance is as Slayer-in-Waiting, at which point she'll be trained by Jess and no doubt get to know most or all of the pc's. Then, at some unspecified time, the current Slayer will die and Ellie will be called. Then the idea is that, as Slayer, she has a limited shelf life so (as Louisa says) she doesn't become the focal point of the game. Hence the two-week suggestion.

I wasn't proposing to have her appear and disappear. Given this time-frame it's possible she'll be around (game time) for weeks or months or even years (assuming the game goes that long :)).... Plenty of time to have her become an important part of our characters' lives.

This seems like a great idea to me. Go for it. And I agree that she should be killed in a climactic way, like Buffy was, doing something none of us can.

Ok, question. Does a slayer waiting in have the same "super strength, etc" as the real slayer or are those powers given to her once she is appionted the slayer?

The way I understand it, a potential slayer has slightly above normal strength and agility, but not super strength and agility (like the slayer does).
