ok... i know that not all of us were old enough to have listened to music in the 70s and 80s but i thought it'd be nice to know what that made up that era for the rest of you guys.

name me your top ten bands / artists that made it big in the 70s and 80s and a song from each of them. *grin* better yet, give us some of the songs' lyrics...

now, the important thing here is NOT to surf for the lyrics online... i think it'll be interesting to see what kind of weird stuff comes out when people mis-hear or mis-interpret song lyrics.

my top ten list would be as follows:

1. depeche mode - blasphemous rumours
"i don't want to start any blasphemous rumours, but i think that god has a sick sense of humour... and when i die, i expect to find him laughing..."

2. madonna - express yourself (or anything else before her "justify my love" album!)

3. michael jackson - man in the mirror
"i'm starting with the man in the mirror... i'm asking him to change his ways... and no message could have been any clearer... if you wanna make the world a better place, take a look yourself and make that change!"

4. new order - bizarre love traingle / blue monday
"there's no sense in telling me. the wisdom of a fool won't set your free... but that's the way that it goes and it's what nobody knows... and everyday my confusion grows. every time i see you falling, i get down on my knees and pray. waiting for the final moment you say the words that i can't say..."

5. erasure - oh l'amour

6. u2 - with or without you / all i want is you
"see the sun set in your eyes... see the thorn twist in your side... i wait for you... sleight of hand and twist of fate... on a bed of nails she makes me wait... and i'm waiting for you... with or without you..."
"you say, you want diamonds on a ring of gold. you say, you want our story to remain untold. but all the promises we made, from the cradle to the grave... when all i want... is you.."

7. chicago - hard habit to break

8. pet shops boys - what have i done to deserve this

9. prince (or whatever he calls himself now!) - when doves cry
"maybe i'm just like my mother. she's never satisfied... maybe i'm just like my father. this is what it sounds like, when the doves cry..."

10. belinda carlisle - summer rain / heaven is a place on earth

U2--"With or without you....with or without you..."

Metallica--"Hybrid children watch the sea, pray for father roaming free..."

Gods, it was too hard to decide. These aren't necessarily my top ten, but they're all songs I used to listen to quite a bit way back then...

Lionel Richie - Hello - Hello? Is it me you're looking for? 'Cause I wonder where you are, and I wonder what you do. Are you somewhere feeling lonely, or is someone loving you? Tell me how to win your heart, for I haven't got a clue, but I want to tell you so much... I love you.

Billy Joel - Innocent Man - (These lyrics are probably all out of order, but here goes...) Some people sleep all alone every night instead of taking a lover to bed. Some people think that's it's easier to hate than to wait any more. Some people run from a possible fight, some people figure they can never win. And although this is a fight I could lose, the accused is an innocent man. I aaaaaaaaam an innocent man. Oh, yes I am an innocent man.

Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody - Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy? Caught in a landslide, no escape from reality. Open your eyes, look up to the skies and see. I'm just a poor boy, I need no sympathy, because I’m easy come, easy go. Little high, little low. Anyway the wind blows, doesn’t really matter to me. To me.

Meatloaf – You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth – (I always loved this spoken bit at the start…) On a hot summer night, would you offer your throat to the wolf with the red roses? Will he offer me his mouth? Yes. Will he offer me his teeth? Yes. Will he offer me his jaws? Yes. Will he offer me his hunger? Yes. Again, will he offer me his hunger? Yes! And will he starve without me? Yes! And does he love me? Yes. Yes. On a hot summer night, would you offer your throat to the wolf with the red roses? Yes. I bet you say that to all the boys.

Dire Straits – Money for NothingNow look at them yo-yos, that’s the way you do it. You play the guitar on the MTV. That ain’t working, that’s the way you do it. Get your money for nothing and your chicks for free. That ain’t working, that’s the way you do it. I tell you them guys ain’t dumb. Maybe get a blister on your little finger. Maybe get a blister on your thumb.

Redgum – I Was Only Nineteen (A Walk in the Light Green)I can still see Frankie drinking tinnies in the Grand Hotel on a thirty-six hour rec leave in Vung Tau, And I can still hear Frankie lying screaming in the jungle ‘til the morphine came and killed the bloody row. And the Anzac legends didn't mention mud and blood and tears. And the stories that my father told me never seemed quite real. I caught some pieces in my back that I didn't even feel. God help me, I was only nineteen.

Sting – Don’t Stand So Close To MeHer friends are so jealous, you know how bad girls get. Sometimes it's not so easy to be the teacher's pet. Temptation. Frustration. So bad it makes him cry. Wet bus stop, she's waiting. His car is warm and dry. Don't stand, don't stand so, don't stand so close to me. (Please don’t stand so close to me…)

Charlie Daniels Band – The Devil Went Down to GeorgiaJohnny, rosin up your bow and play your fiddle hard, ‘cause Hell broke loose in Georgia and the Devil deals the cards. And if you win, you get this shiny fiddle made of gold, but if you lose the Devil gets your soul.

Bob Geldof – I Don’t Like MondaysThe silicon chip inside her head gets switched to overload. And nobody's gonna go to school today, she's gonna make them stay at home. And daddy doesn't understand it, he always said she was as good as gold. And he can see no reasons ‘cause there are no reasons. What reason do you need to be shown?

Bonnie Tyler – Total Eclipse of the Heart(Turnaround) Every now and then I get a little bit lonely and you’re never coming ‘round. (Turnaround) Every now and then I get a little bit tired of listening to the sound of my tears. (Turnaround) Every now and then I get little bit nervous that the best of all the years have gone by. (Turnaround) Every now and then I get a little bit terrified, and then I see the look in your eyes.

And then there's a bunch of others that I grew up with - this is but a small selection...

Tears for Fears – Everybody Wants to Rule the World
Bryan Adams – Summer of ‘69
Belinda Carlisle – Summer Rain
Men at Work – Down Under
Dragon – Rain
The Bangles – Eternal Flame
Toto – Rain in Africa
Eurythmics – Sweet Dreams
Taylor Dayne – Tell it to My Heart
Fleetwood Mac – Rhiannon
Led Zeppelin – Stairway to Heaven
The Eagles – Hotel California
AC/DC – It’s a Long Way to the Top
Meatloaf – Bat out of Hell
Don MacLean – American Pie
Elton John – Crocodile Rock
Boney M – Ma Baker

I like your list, Heather. After reading your list, I'm left wanting to redo mind. Top ten was not enough. I think it would have been more appropriate to list our Top 40 while doing Casey Kasem impressions. :)

I've had Billy Joel's Innocent Man stuck in my brain for days. Before TMBG came along, it was Billy Joel for me. That guy is amazing, one of the best song writers of our time, in my wee opinion. I own all of his pre-modern stuff, with the exception of his later projects. I do own his last album, where he gives up lyrics and takes up classical piano. Good stuff, if you're interested.

I dont have a top ten list because I am not that big a "music" person. IF its on the FM, i like it, then i listen to it. I have no clue who sang the song or the song title, or whether its pop, rock, or heavy metal.

But i do remember my favorite oldies group are the Boney M's, love all their songs, especially Ma Baker and Brown Girl In the Ring. I won't sing them as i keep forgetting the words...

Actually i love all their songs :D.

I also started to listen to They Might Be Giants after Sid recommended them and i have to admit, some of their songs are really nice and funny. (i just love "No"! :D )

Yay! She listened to They Might Be Giants. Oh yeah, oh yeah, it's my birthday.

"Or something to that effect."

Saadia, don't get me started. TMBG are so eclectic, and their lyrics funny and satirical and with words well-chosen. And, and...

Great, you got me started.

Oh yeah, oh yeah, it's my birthday...

after sid's post about billy joel, i went back to some old cds i haven't listened to in yonks and started playing them again. *grin* here are some of the piano man's music i use to love...

just the way you are
"don't go changing, to try and please me... you never let me down before... don't imagine you're too familiar and I don't see you anymore... i wouldn't leave you in times of trouble... we never could have come this far... i took the good times, i'll take the bad times... i'll take you just the way you are..."

the longest time
"i don't care what consequence it brings... i have been a fool for lesser things... i want you so bad... i think you ought to know that... i intend to hold you for the longest time... oh oh oh, for the longest time... oh oh oh, for the longest time..."

we didn't start the fire (my friends and i had helluva time trying to memorise the lyrics to this one!)
"harry truman, doris day, red china, johnny ray, south pacific, walter winchell, joe dimaggio... joe mccarthy, richard nixon, studebaker, television, north korea, south korea, marilyn monroe... we didn't start the fire... it was always burning since the world's been turning... we didn't start the fire... no, we didn't light it but we tried to fight it..."

Ah, yes. "Just the Way You Are." I remember teaching myself those lyrics and singing them badly, wishing I had that man's voice. A very sad time in my life.

How about:

A picture postcard
A folded star
A program of the play
File away a photograph
of your holiday
And your momentos will turn to dust
But that's the price you will pay
Every year the souvenirs
slowly fade away

Or Summer Highland Falls:
They say that these are not the best of times
They're the only times I've ever known
And I believe there is a time for meditation
In cathedrals of our own
Now I have seen that sad surrender in my lover's eyes
I can only stand apart and sympathise
For we are always what our situations hand us
It's either sadness or euphoria

*sigh*

Thanks for the nostalgia, April. I liked all those songs you chose. 'Course, I own most of his albums. I just like Billy.

whomever you learnt it for sid, i think she's a very lucky lady. ;) really... it's not really the voice that counts (ok, it counts. even billy joel wouldn't have made it if sounded like a squealing pig when he sang) but if a guy took the time and effort to learn the song just for me, i'd be awfully touched.

from the same album - the stranger released (1977) - she's always a woman. i love the way the song describes the many facets of a woman's personality. a friend of mine once said that women are such complex creatures, much more so than men. guess billy thought so too. :)

she can kill with a smile
she can wound with her eyes
she can ruin your faith with her casual lies
and she only reveals what she wants you to see
she hides like a child
but she's always a woman to me

she can lead you to live
she can take you or leave you
she can ask for the truth
but she'll never believe you
and she'll take what you give her as long as it's free
she steals like a thief
but she's always a woman to me

she takes care of herself
she can wait if she wants
she's ahead of her time
oh, and she never gives out
and she never gives in
she just changes her mind

she will promise you more
than the garden of eden
then she'll carelessly cut you
and laugh while you're bleedin'
but she'll bring out the best
and the worst you can be
blame it all on yourself
cause she's always a woman to me

she is frequently kind
and she's suddenly cruel
she can do as she pleases
she's nobody's fool
but she can't be convicted
she's earned her degree
and the most she will do
is throw shadows at you
but she's always a woman to me

Oooh, April.... I've always loved that one. I've been a big Billy Joel fan for years, too. Innocent Man would have to be my favourite, but who can forget the imagery of Goodnight Saigon? Or Pressure? Or Honesty? *sigh*

The year was 1990. I was 19 years old. I'd just broken up with the love of my life, a girl who was born in Bankok but raised in America. My guts were spaghetti.

I retreated to my grandparents house in Camarillo, California for a month or two while I got over this girl. I took up jogging, but I couldn't chase her out of my system. I bought that Billy Joel album and I learned the lyrics to "She's Always a Woman." That song was written for the object of my affection. I listened to it over and over while I drew her portrait in pencil. I worked from memory. The finished product looked so good, I still can't believe it was me that drew it.

But, April, I was sick. Sick, sick, sick. She was lucky; you're right. How many girls ever get such devotion? But she threw it away.

"I'll never put on a lifejacket again."

But I'm all better now. Now I hum that same old tune to slightly different lyrics:

It’s been quite awhile
It’s been a long time
Since I made that mis-take
Of lovin’ a child
But I’m not so grown up
As I’d like to seem
I still hate that bitch
and
She's ever been cheating on me

Ohhhhhh
She's moved on, there’s no doubt
And I’ve put her beee-hind
Deep in my hive mind
But ohhhhh
Sometimes she stings back
Sometimes I reee-call
How she drove me mad

It’s been quite awhile
It’s been a long time
Since I last mang-gled
Her face into rhyme
I’m lovin’ my life now
As plain as can be
I’m over that bitch
but
She’s ever been cheating on me
