The Amazons
“We lived in darkness for so long, hunted by our enemies. But now we fight! To maintain our way of life. Now it's our turn to stand in the light, for we are Amazons.....Warrior Women.”
The Amazons were a nation of fierce tribes women who lived in Themiscyra on the banks of the river Thermodon (later Amazons moved to Aretias, the famous island of the Amazons). Mythology describes the appearance of Amazons as being very tall and athletic looking. Traditionally Amazons were great archers and would cut off their right breast to improve their aim. These warriors dedicated their lives to several doctrines; central to their civilisation were the concepts of freedom and strength. Although the Amazons were warriors they were not inhuman or cruel, in fact they were incredibly noble and trustworthy. Their principles were not just limited to physical strength but also mental and emotional strength. As a result these women were not merely savage warriors as classic myth would have us believe, but also noble and wise leaders.
They were often referred to as “The Warring Amazon Man Haters” because of their antipathy for the opposite sex. Men were not allowed admittance to the tribe as the Amazons believed all men to be untrustworthy and traitorous. In order for the Amazon race to survive, the warriors mated with the neighbouring tribe of men. Any male children were either sent to their fathers or killed, and female offspring were kept as future Amazons.
In governing the tribe, there have been accounts of two queens - one for defence and another for domestic affairs. In each case the queen was always chosen by election – choosing from the best warriors their tribe had to offer.
