BACKGROUND:

The Early Years ~
Very little is known about Janus’ childhood except that she was born and raised in Salisbury, England. Her father died while she was just a small child, her mother lived until she was almost 17-years-old when she finally died of a heart attack as a result of a progressive Muscular Dystrophy disease. It was soon after that Janus began studying the Craft.

The Coven of Sindell ~
In 1978 when Janus was 22-years-old, she applied for initiation into the Coven of Sindell and one year later she was admitted. Janus quickly worked her way up through the ranks until in 1980 she was finally offered a place within the Great 13 of the Inner Circle, after the mysterious death of one of the initiates…

Janus’ thirst for power and knowledge soon caught the attention of Council Elder Serapis Aquilis, she admired him for the control and power that he wielded within the coven and the two soon became intimate acquaintances through their shared passion for the black arts. In 1981 they joined forces to gain control over the infamous Cloch Cosan which was being brought together in Paris. Janus was re-united with both Victor and former lover Tempest in a bid to retrieve the Cloch Cosan from the possession of the Order of Bishamon. Although the plan failed and Janus returned home to England she and Serapis remained close friends and co-conspirators and in the following years recruited a following within the initiates at Sindell, forming a secret allegiance to their dark cause.

Two years later Janus had the first vision prophesising her death and was later diagnosed as being in the early stages of Emery-Dreifuss Muscular Dystrophy – the same disease that killed her mother. Janus was of course horrified at the prospect of going through a long and drawn out painful death, the same that she had watched her mother endure for years and years as a child. Janus was determined not to end up a weak and powerless cripple as her mother had.

In 1984 Janus was sent to America by the coven to retrieve a rogue witch by the name of Kadee Wiccham. Janus tracked her down to her family home in Los Angeles and brought both Kadee and her daughter Catherine back to England. Upon the death of Kadee, Janus took her daughter, Catherine Wiccham to live with an ex-member of the coven; someone whom she knew would raise the child in the ways of the Craft and develop those powers that she already possessed. Janus visited the child many times in the passing years and each time she was astonished at the amount of power that the girl possessed for one so young and inexperienced. Janus became obsessed with developing Catherine’s powers as a witch as she began to formulate a way to avoid her own demise.

When Catherine was fifteen Janus brought Serapis to meet with the young girl and asked for his assistance in initiating her into the coven, in exchange for his help she promised to surrender to him the ‘lost’ Rites of the Cloch Cosan. One year later Catherine joined the coven and Janus watched from afar with zealous enthusiasm as Catherine’s talent for the Craft began to grow. However, Catherine’s close relationship with fellow wiccan Lucien Aeterus began to give her cause for concern, especially when the young couple began to talk of getting married and starting a new life outside of the coven. In desperation Janus once more appealed to Serapis for his help in dividing the two lovers, Serapis took it upon himself to ensure that Kate continued under the instruction of the Coven for as long as Janus desired her to remain so.

By 2004 Janus’ disease had begun to progress, so far she had been able to slow the effects by using various spells and herbal amulets, but after almost ten years since she had been first diagnosed with the illness the symptoms finally caught up with her. Although she had often felt a weakness in her muscles, especially in her upper body this was now much more profound and Janus was beginning to become more dependant upon Serapis for help with her mobility. Serapis performed many spells and invocations that gave Janus a temporary sensation of strength and vitality, unfortunately none of these lasted more than a few days at a time.

Such events meant that she and Serapis had to begin making preparations for Janus to transpossess Kate’s body. Serapis set up an elaborate scheme whereby Kate would effectively ‘kill’ Janus and take her spirit into her body to await a time when Serapis could complete the ritual.

On 1st August 2004 Janus was ‘murdered’ at the hands of Catherine, her body was consecrated to the flames and her ashes distributed upon the wind. However, her soul was still bound to the earthly plane within Catherine’s mind.

The Ritual of Transpossession ~
On 22nd February 2005, Serapis began the ritual of transpossession to bring Janus back from the dead. His plan was thought to be a failure since Kate was rescued and the ritual interrupted.

What actually transpired was that Tempest became the new 'vessel' assuming Kate's role because he had accidentally 'marked' himself with the blood of the innocent. Tempest absorbed Janus' soul and attempted to open the Nether Arch, during which the combined essence of Tempest and Janus fought for control of the body and eventually rendered it asunder.

Janus' soul has now finally passed on to 'the other side'

POWERS/ABILITIES:
Before her death Janus was one of the most powerful witches in the Inner Circle, the limits of her powers were unknown although she possessed such powers as levitation, blinking and cell speed manipulation.

Janus was also an accomplished warrior, and was trained in many forms of combat including such martial arts as Tai kwon Do and Kung Fu.
