I am redoing the back-end of LA By Night and for the characters I'd like to have something a little more dynamic and easier to maintain.
But that means setting up the system and then filling it with the backlog of information we have already done.
to that end...
I made this list of the PCs, but I need a similar one for the NPCs. This can be saved as a text file and imported into Excel (if you have it) to make it easier.
the "other" column has a series of letters. I was thinking that something like this could be used to generate the various and sundry 'lists' of characters like demons, vampires, etc...
The codes I have used are:
m = spellcasting ability
H = Human
h = partially human (meaning partially something else - includes cyborgs)
d = demon
u = undead
v = vampire
L = Lycanthrope
S = Shapeshifter
x = deceased
C = Celestial (angel or fallen angels or PTB)
w = Watchers' Council
p = psychic (as opposed to psychic powers born of magical ability)
Some other codes that might work (but I didn't use) are:
f = fae
1 = (numeral one) leader of an organization
V = Order of Valor
a = assassin
and anything else you thnk needs to be categorized.

Dave, I changed a little your classification as I went, when I found some other things that I thougth were worthy to categorize.
I used three variables: Nature, Abilities and Affiliation. Mostly everything can go in there. This is the result, if you think anything should be changed, please tell me.
Nature:
H = Human
h = partially human (meaning partially something else - includes cyborgs)
d = demon
u = undead
v = vampire
l = Lycanthrope
g = ghost
c = Celestial (angel or fallen angels or PTB)
f = fae
x = deceased
Abilities:
m = spellcasting ability
p = psychic (as opposed to psychic powers born of magical ability)
s = Shapeshifter
i= inmortal
1 = (numeral one) leader of an organization
Affiliation: (capital letters, for diferentiation)
W= White Hats
C = Watchers' Council
S= Coven of Sindell
M= Ministry of Magic
&= Wolfram & Hart
U= Society of Ulle
P= Police Department
D= Demon Police
V= Order of Valor
I already changed the letters in the PC list and finished the Human NPCs. I'm sending you the file by email.

However, I do have to point out that you have a capital H for Human and a capital H for Wolfram & Hart.... :)

Geez, I didnt notice that :? And I tried not to repeat the letters...
Thing is, the distinction that Dave did between completely human and partially human works... we need a new letter for Wofram & Hart, or a new letter for partially human (so we keep the low case for nature)

What about using '&' for Wolfram & Hart. There is no reason you can't use symbols as well as Letters...
Although it might also be possible to use an L (for Lawyers) too.
