History
Jules Fournier was born in 1935 in France, the son of a schoolteacher. His youth was interrupted by the German occupation of France during World War II, during which his father joined the resistance. Although he was very young, Jules wanted to help and would accompany his father to the meetings to make their appearance less suspicious. But one day their resistance cell was discovered and the Germans released chemical weapons into the area. Jules’ father made the boy hide in a lead-lined box, where he stayed while he heard the screams and cries of his dying friends and family.
But as he lay hidden he felt strange sensations, as though he were being stretched out and then compressed into a tight bundle before coming back to normal. When all had been silent for a long time he finally emerged from his hiding place, but the weird effects continued. He watched in amazement as he saw the scene around him freeze to stillness, and he walked right in front of a German officer without the man reacting at all. Then, later, he seemed mired in molasses while he lay behind a hedge and watched sheep race past at breakneck speed. Finally the nauseating time dilations settled down, but as Jules grew older he found he could speed or slow time simply by willing it.
After the war he found he had no clear idea of his direction in life. For years he went from odd job to odd job, until he wound up as a clerk for a stockbroker. There inspiration finally hit him. He watched how fortunes were made and broken on the flow of information, and reasoned that with his ability, he would be able to access virtually any information he wanted, often right under people’s noses. With his meagre savings he started his first company in 1962, brokering deals and investing in stocks and properties. His methods weren’t perfect, however, and despite his advantage he found his company losing money by the late 60’s.
Determined to learn from his mistakes, Jules tried again, this time creating a company that grew in stature until Fournier Enterprises became a name to be reckoned with. Once he’d built a stable base he began to branch out into the world of venture capital in 1975, and had a few short-term successes under his belt when he heard of Verity Jennings’ attempt to gain funding for Humanitech. When he first looked into the company he was disturbed by the idea of genetic reversion of environmental metahumans and was inclined to ignore it. Then he wondered if he might not be better off being involved in such a project in order to guide its path.
But when he met Verity Jennings in 1978 a new possibility opened up. Perhaps unsurprisingly, given the nature of Humanitech’s business, Jennings asked Fournier for his personal views on metahumans. The discussion that followed gave Fournier, for the first time in his life since the war, a real purpose. Soon Fournier joined Jennings and Douglass in their bid to pave the way for metahumans to govern themselves on their own terms.
Powers
Time Manipulation: Jules Fournier can fold time around himself, taking himself out of the timestream as it affects the rest of the world. He can move faster within that time bubble so that the rest of the world appears more or less stationary, or he can slow down his own personal time so that he’s effectively frozen in stasis until he stops the effect. He can interact with the rest of the world by the merest extension of his time bubble beyond his skin. In that way he can, for example, open books to read the contents without causing the paper to burst into flame from the friction thus generated.
