While I started reading Batman with issue #609.. boo.. I will say a few things..

I am not going to be like the people on the DC boards who make HUSH theories every single day, those people are just childlish at times, but I do have a few opinions.

As far as Hush being revealed as first Harvey Dent and then "Jason Todd" (We still don't know for sure), I like a theory that I read on the DC boards that ended with Hush actually being Steve Checkmate. I also would like the idea of Hush turning out to be Tommy Elliot.

On another note, I think that all of the people that tell the theory makers that they are wrong just because that person isn't on the contest list are being played by DC.

Batman: Hush

Mike's picture

hmmm... yes... the boards are getting quite overrun with theories aren't they...

I still have no idea who it is. I think the best thing is to wait unitl the end and then see... that's the best thing to do when you have a Loeb story. I mean, I guess it's possible to figure it out before hand, but the easiest thing to do is see who it is and then go back and see where evidence supporting who it was was given.

Batman: Hush

Kieran's picture

i swear, it's Jean-Paul...IT IS

other than that, solid issue, was wondering when scarecrow would come about...btw, Gotham Knights is also having a Jason Todd storyline

i just hope DC doesn't fall into Marvel's trap, apparently, Barry Allen is set for a return as well :?

Batman: Hush

Kieran's picture

any of u batfans out here Az fans?!?!?!?!?!?! :P  i sooooooooooo miss him

Batman: Hush

Mike's picture

I'm not a fan. Sorry  .

Of course, I haven't really read many things with him in it (although I'm currently working on Knightfall). I doubt he will be Hush though (sorry :? )

Batman: Hush

Kieran's picture

hehehe, he wont be Hush...apparently volume II is in the works...i so got giddy like a fanboy when Az's face appeared on Oracle's screen in BOP #56 :P

btw, the Knightfall, Knightquest and Knightsend series is TERRIFIC...once of the best bat reads ever...batman: sword of azrael is good too...hehe, one of the killer Azrael story arcs was when Bane returned to Gotham and wanted a rematch with Az...ahaha, did Az kick his ass

Batman: Hush

Kieran's picture

btw, have any of u batfans voted on the DC website as to who u think Hush is???? there's a contest where the top prize is an original cover drawing by Jim Lee :P

my guess is Tommy Elliott (altho i dont think its him, but thats the only plausible one i can think of) and i seriously hope it isnt jason todd (btw, the current storyline in gotham knights is about him...so far so good, solid)...i mean, when u think about it, tommy always said he thought ahead, i cant believe he died like that, it was such a reckless death unlike anything tommy would do...

some big clue seems to be the spy, but i cant figure out who that is...it isnt Catwoman, unless she is unknowingly

grrrr....two more issues

Batman: Hush

Mike's picture

I think I voted for Two-Face because Loeb seems to like him so much (I.E. The Long Halloween and Dark Victory) but it's probably not him.

I thought it could be the Riddler, because he was used and discarded so easily, and Hush sort of it one big Riddle. But I think he's on the villains cover of 619, which would mean he isn't Hush

And it seems to me that if Jason really is back, he probably isn't Hush. We've seen Killer Croc, Harvey Dent and Jason Todd in bandages (making it seem like they could all be Clayface) and I think sombody is pulling the strings so even if Jason is back there could be sombody higher than him.

And I really hope Batman and Catwoman stick together. And I hope Hush isn't all a dream.

Batman: Hush

Kieran's picture

dear god no....that can't be a dream...DC would be stooping lower than marvel if they did that

as for Cats and Bats...i kinda like them together, altho, i don't know, i dont want to see a lovey-dovey Batman...i mean, look at how he got distracted in Metropolis and the Joker issues....but they are the hottest couple tho and go well together, the dynamic is there  i loved this one, my fave panel was when (#612 i think) catwoman punches out poison ivy after ivy was already neutralized and then Superman asked "Was that necessary?"...both Catwoman and Batman looked @ Supes and said in unison "Yes!" haha, classic

Batman: Hush

Kieran's picture

grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr....why? why? why, why, why, must they ALWAYS do this?!?!?!?!? this was the freaking best issue so far in the story...i can't believe what harold did  i loved that guy...

arrggg, my gut is telling me Harvey (it's Jeph's fave, but even the clues point to him..."a single soul dwelling in 2 bodies...") but i really don't want it...he got plastic surgery for cryin' out loud...

hahaha, watch it be Jean-Paul...poor guy never got over his alter ego...

or there's jason blood too, but he can't be a villain

Batman: Hush

Mike's picture

Sorry for taking so long to reply Ric, I just got the issue today. Loved it, as usual, although I didn't really like the cover all that much (the only Hush cover I haven't loved).

Anyway, I was really shocked to see Harold there. I've never actually read the comic with Harold in it, I've only heard about him and I never thought that Jeph would include him in the biggest Batman story of the year! And of course, it was suprising that he died in the same issue. I'm also thinking two-face/harvey after Hush's last words, but Jeph can be one tricky devil.

Anyway, for all of you who haven't seen them, I"m including links to both of Batman 619 covers. Not only are the beautiful, but they give clues as to who "isn't" Hush.

Hero's cover

Villain's cover

(Both are so great, I just don't know which one I want more :D )

Anyway, I'm going to post a long evaluation of Hush in a sec. Just hold on.

Batman: Hush

Mike's picture

Okay, so I was writing this really long post and the computer shut down on me. I’m sure you all know how much that sucks. Anyway, the point of this post is to analyze different characters in Hush and hopefully try to figure out who the bad guy is. All thoughts are welcome:)

Anyway, let’s start with the newest character:

Harold- Never, never, did I expect to see Harold in Hush. I just didn’t think he was important enough a character, especially when characters like Batgirl aren’t in it. But he is in it, so I’m officially crowing Jeph Loeb reining king of plot twists (although he probably held that title anyway). And of course Harold died in the same issue, so that’s another twist. Anyway, it became obvious to me that Harold was the one who used the Lazarus pit. How else could he have gained the ability to talk and walk right? Harold is just an innocent player though…

Two-Face/Harvey Dent: Now this guy might not be so innocent. It was apparent that two-face was under the bandages when he flipped his coin that first time. What we didn’t know was that it was actually Harvey Dent, not two-face under the bandages. I thought that he might be the one who used the pit, was now I don’t think so. Harvey Dent told Commissioner Gordon to stop Batman from killing Joker, and got Joker out of jail/arkham. I thought that maybe he was going to have Joker kill Jason, to finish the job, but Jason is apparently not alive so there goes that theory. Could it be possible that Two-Face split from Harvey Dent and there are two people under two bandage costumes? Or is it possible that clayface was impersonating Harvey like he was dong Jason?

Lex Luthor and Talia: Unless I’m mistaken, a boy was kidnapped at the beginning of the Hush ark whose father worked for Lex or something like that. When Talia was kidnapped, Lex didn’t seem worried and almost like he expected her to get kidnapped. Harley Quinn mentioned the whole thing being scripted, so isn’t it possible that Lex knew Talia was going to be kidnapped? And what of Talia herself? She knows a lot about Batman, including who he is. She could have found out about Jason and used it against him. She has the recourses (as does lex) to give the people what they want, including synthetic kryptonite for Ivy’s lipstick and whatever mutated Killer Croc. Also, she knows where Lazarus pits are, and could have gotten Harold one (or whoever used it). Plus, neither Lex nor Talia are on either 619 cover, which means either (probably Talia if either) could be Hush.

Ra’s Al Ghul: He knows were Lazarus pits are, knows Batman’s identity, could have easily found out about Jason Todd and gotten the villains what they wanted. Also, I know Tommy talked about chess pieces, including a spy. Couldn’t Talia be Ra’s spy? I know they don’t like each other, but maybe that’s just an act. Talia mentioned “games”… could Hush be what she was referring to? A game between her father and her lover?

Tommy Elliot: Something’s rotten in the city of Gotham City. Of course, it would be a little obvious to introduce a character and have them be the villain, but he does seem suspicious. What’s even more odd is that Batman would call him first, as Oracle pointed out. Of course he is dead, but if he was the one who actually used the Lazarus pit than he could still be alive. However, I think it much more likely that he is on the good guys side. I believe Bruce placed the “spy” piece on Tommy’s casket. Huntress talked about getting new stuff from somebody wealthy who later died. Tommy fits that description, but did Huntress say he was bad? She saved Batman’s life all right, because the person who gave her the money told her to go to Crime Alley. Maybe there are two forces, each trying to counteract the other?

Huntress: Huntress… seems to be caught in the middle of things. Batman implies that she is under Scarecrow’s fear gas, and the fact that she sees Catwoman as the old her would explain that. However, if what said above is true then she is working for Tommy Elliot. She did save Batman’s life, after all.

Catwoman: Catwoman is another puzzle altogether. On one hand, she’s on the heroes cover so we know she’s good. On the other… she’s very suspicious. There’s a great deal of talk about trust… Batman says he trusts her, but what if that’s what she wants? Batman has implied that the person controlling the villains might be controlling Catwoman as well? Poison Ivy? Did we ever see her come out of Ivy’s control? What if she is still under that control, and he constant kisses to Bruce are controlling Bruce’s mind? Scarecrow mentioned that his mind was affected by another. Also, she ‘accidentally’ let Huntress get away because she was helping Batman. That seems a little fishy to me.

Riddler: I once thought that the Riddler was hush because Hush is basically a riddle, but he is on the villains cover and now I don’t think so.

Joker and Harley Quinn: The Joker did not kill Thomas Elliot. Harley Quinn said that the whole thing was scripted. Was Batman supposed to kill the Joker? Above, I mentioned the idea that there were two conflicting forces, each trying to outdo the other. If Harvey is on Batman’s side, then he could have sent Jim Gordon to stop Batman from killing the person he was supposed to. The Joker is still coming back though, and is being used by Harvey dent. Hopefully he’s on batman’s side.

Robin: The boy wonder. Harley Quinn mentioned him first. She said something like, “and playing the part of Robin the boy hostage is Catwoman”. Was Robin supposed to be at the opera, and was he supposed to be the one who got shot? Harley Quinn also said, “If you don’t want the part, don’t play the part, cat lady!” That would only enforce this idea.

Bruce: Bruce hit his head, and went to the surgeon. Is it possible, that this is only a dream and he is still sitting on an operating table? I hope not, but look at this: We never see the person behind the bandage’s face (assuming it is someone other than Harvey Dent). Bruce would have bandages on because he had a head injury. A running theme in Hush is happiness… Bruce has never been happy… gotten the one thing he wanted.

So who is the person behind the bandages: My guess? Bruce Wayne and this is all a dream.

I know, I hate the idea to but look at these points:

- bandages and Bruce would have bandages.
- The person knows all about bruce.
- The running theme of happiness, which bruce doesn’t have.
- The whole thing is scripted. Hush knows what Batman would do because it is him doing the dream!
- He got hit on the head early on. Duh, dream state.
- A baterang cut his bat-rope. Batman carried baterangs.
- He knows where Jason’s grave was.
- He wants to tell Catwoman his secret, and he did in his dream. In his dream he’s… happy, which he can’t be in the real world.

If that isn't right, there is another solution that follows the same path. Batman keeps on mentioning the lazarus pit, and how the person coming out of it is insane. What if Tommy but Batman in the lazarus pit to save his life. This would account for his recovery, and make sense why Hush knows everything about Batman. Plus, Hush keeps talking about duality, which would imply two-face. But Batman/Bruce is another duality. Hush said "What are friends" Batman has no friends, Bruce craves them. It makes sense either way.

I hope the second one is right, but not the first one. So what do you all think of my post?

Batman: Hush

Kieran's picture

ok ok...sitting in my boring Intermediate Cal class, i went over and over the "clues" uncle jeph has left us...

@ first, i thought last issue's "two souls living in one body" was a key key clue, but then, half the bat cast and all his "family" have dual identities...so the suspect could just as well be nightwing, robin, oracle, batgirl, hell lets throw in orpheus, in addition to the allies u mentioned before...

harold (bless his departed, loveable soul), i think, is a big key somehow...assuming that this ISNT a dream (madon, that is gonna be one HUGE letdown...so many writers are saying that this wont be in bat continuity so the dream theory could fit...btw, props on that theory mike, solid linking)...no one knows who obscure little harold is, aside from batman and his "family", to know him would mean that u really know batman and his whole operation...

ahh, its friday nite, lemme read all the ishes again and ill come back with something more coherent...

btw, talia WOULD BE a good suspect except for the fact that Hush isnt built like her...she's way too small to be Hush

Batman: Hush

Mike's picture

Oh, and another thing.

- Huntress said that a person gaver her money to do what she did (I.E. go to crime alley) but now that the person was dead everything was unraveling. I'm pretty sure everyone (including myself) assumed the person was Tommy Elliot because he fit the description so well. But... if my theory is true then that person is none other than Bruce Wayne.

Huntress doesn't know Batman and Bruce Wayne are the same.

If Hush is Batman, he would know that he was going that he was going to be in crime alley.

Huntress said the person died. It is also assumable that she was under the influence of Scarecrow. She knew Batman was alive, because she saved his life and said so. But what if Crane's gas made her think Bruce had hurt his head and died? He did hurt her head, and we know she's delusional, so I don't think it's unreasonable to think that she could believe Bruce was dead.

And his money would be clean, as she stated it was.

Okay, and now for another thing. Before hush began... wasn't there a poster or something showing the heroes on one side and the villains on the other. Unless I'm wrong, (and I could be, I'll have to check it out further), Batman's face was on one side and then split into Hush's face for the other. Either Loeb or Lee said the poster would make sense by the end of Hush, so if Batman is Hush then it would make sense.

Of course, there are still flaws to this theory. Like, who the bandaged person is. IF it's a dream, then it could be BAtman. But if it isn't, he can't be in two places at once and he most definitely wouldn't use a gun. So maybe it's two-face or Harvey Dent? Or even Huntress maybe. I thought I saw her with two guns when she was fighting Catwoman.

Just some more thoughts :D

Batman: Hush

Kieran's picture

ONE MORE DAY until the big day!!!!!!!!!! :P yikes, it seems Az is picking up alot of steam as the possible Hush...altho ID BE RIGHT, i dont him as a villain, ill be damned but he was a noble hero

Batman: Hush

Mike's picture

I know :D I'm so excited :D

Except... I subscribe to the comic, rather than get it in the store, so I won't know until next week probably  Damn Dc comics with their crazy late subscribtions. Last month, however, I got the comic one day after it came out so maybe that will happen this month also. So, until I get it, I"ll be avoiding this particular topic, and the DC comic message boards, like the plauge.

I'm especially excited to get one of the awseome covers 8O

(P.S. I hope I'm right about Bruce, cause I'm almost always wrong at these mysteries  )

(Another P.S. Ric, have you ever read The Long Halloween and Dark Victory? NOw
that was Jeph Loeb at his best!)

Batman: Hush

Kieran's picture

I KNOW...and tim sale's art was fantastic...jeph has this fascination with harvey its unbelievable...altho, based on TLV and DV, i really hope Hush isnt Two-Face :? kinda anti-climactic, no?

Batman: Hush

Mike's picture

Yeah, that would suck. I think Jeph wrote TLH though to center around Harvey Dent, because he said that there were a lot of stories focusing around Two-Face, but few around Harvey Dent, which is why he used him so much. Hopefully, he won't be Hush although we definitely Harvey is going to be appearing in the last issue, along with the Joker...

And did you here that Jeph is writing another follow up to TLH/DV, except this one is focusing on Selina's absence after Valentine's Day in DV. It's called "When in Rome", or something like that, where she tries to figure out if the Roman is her father.

Batman: Hush

Kieran's picture

hehe, ya, i heard...thats gonna solid...ya know what i was thinking (with a little help from the boards), after last issue, how do we know who's been really who? meaning, how many of these people, like Harvey Dent with plastic surgery or TOmmy Elliot was Clayface, heck he could even have been Harold...i wonder if he has a bigger part than this

god, the anticipation is too much, i work tomorrow evening so i can only pick it up @ the earliest thursday :x

Batman: Hush

Mike's picture

Hopefully Mr. Loeb won't leave to much up to the imagination, and will tell who was who. Who had surgery, who was clayface and who used the lazerus pit (if it wasn't Bruce, of course).

Batman: Hush

Soulless Zombie's picture

Okay, so...no spoilers here, in case some of you haven't seen it...but with the grand finale to the HUSH storyline out in comic shops...

What do you folks think? Were you happy with the ending?

I was, and found it refreshing to see the CULPRIT (unnamed here) used that well...and the sense that no matter what, this wasn't all over yet was fun too. The final two pages were just the icing on the cake.

Batman: Hush

Kieran's picture

I've read it and very much enjoyed it...I'm waiting for Mike to get his issue so I won't talk about it yet...but am very pleased that the mystery is still kinda unresolved (hehehe, Jeph and Jim are coming back for a six-part arc after the Azzarello/Risso run!!!! @ least we know the next year of Batman will still kick ass :P )

Batman: Hush

Mike's picture

SQWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!

I FINALLY GOT IT!!! and of course, Ric isn't on at the moment to discuss it with me :? Darn you Ric! Oh well... my comments... (Note: I'm going to write names that would spoil some stuff in white, so just highlite it if you want to read it)

Well I loved it, as usual. Jeph still knows how to right a mystery, although I'm sure this will be one of his more controversial arcs. We have Harvey Dent, who is no longer Two-Face. We have Riddler who knows Bruce's identity. We have Catwoman who knows Bruce's identity. And we... don't have Tommy Elliot's or Jason Todd's bodies.

Did anybody else notice that the only reason we know for certain that it was Tommy Elliot was becasue Harvey told him? Couldn't he have been lying? Oh well... maybe it will be covered in the followup. And wait... wasn't the Joker supposed to come back to do something, or did I miss that?

Speaking of that, I heard Jeph and Jim will not be coming back any time soon, because Jim Lee is already committed to doing somthing else... superman I think. And he's committed to that for a year 8O

Batman: Hush

Kieran's picture

J & J are coming right on after Jim finishes with Superman, so in a year and 6 ishes after the Azzarello/Risso run (which is gonna be so freaking solid)...apparently its the sequel to Hush, so some questions will be answered

the only thing im peeved @ is that wayyyy too many people know that Bruce is Batman...from Hush, 3 more people know...in the current Death and the Maidens mini 2 more know (since when does Talia know that bruce is bat) and now Nyssa?????

im almost positive that Joker knows...he was a prime suspect during the Murderer/Fugitive storyline

here's a list of people who know...

Tommy Elliott
Riddler
Hugo Strange
Bane
Manbat
Manbat's son
David Cain
Talia Head 8O
Ra's Al Ghul
Ubu (Ra's bodyguard)
The Reaper
Joe Chill
Lady Shiva
Deathstroke

ALLIES
Lois Lane
Sasha Bordeaux (and now probably half of Checkmate)
Catwoman
Batgirl (Cain)
Batgirl/Oracle
Robin I,II,III
Spoiler wtf??????? she has no business knowing his identity
all the JLA :?
Alan Scott Green Lantern
Shondra Kinsolving

again, Jim Gordon acts like he does know and so does the Joker

well, @ least Croc and Two-Face are still in the dark

there are probably others who i dont know about

Batman: Hush

Heather's picture

So what you're saying is that he no longer has so much of a secret identity as a 'not listed in the phone book but it is written on the men's room walls' identity. :)

Batman: Hush

Mike's picture

Silly silly Ric. Talia has always known! As long as Ra's has known I think. Let's see... I beleive that Ra's kidnapped Dick Grayson and Talia (or at least pretended to) in order to get Batman to come to his... uh... wherever he lives. I beleive thats when he first offered Batman Talia's hand in marriage! Of course she knows who he is; how else could she be "betrothed" to him?

I can't belive Riddler knows now! That's a major breach in secret identity security. Riddler can be easily manipulated I think... so his secret is no longer safe.

I was so pissed off at Batman has the end though, when he broke up with Catwoman. I mean, I didn't expect them to stay together, but he just broke up with her because she said the word "Hush"? 8O Oh wait... isn't this after he already to her his secret identity and let her into the Batcave? Yes, yes it is. Even if she was bad, she already knows his secrets. God he makes me so mad  (hmmm... I'll have to try and remember that this is only a comic book... not worth getting mad over).

Okay, and another question. What was the point of Batman setting up a fight between Catwoman and Robin? Was it just so she would run off and hopfully they could follow her to the bad guy? I didn't quite get that part...

Batman: Hush

Kieran's picture

hey mike, Hush is making a reappearance in Batman: Gotham Knights #50!!!!!!!!!

its gonna be sick man!!!! get thee to a comic shoppe this instant...oh, it comes out in january or february i think, check the DC site

Batman: Hush

Mike's picture

Hehehehehe I know!!!!!!!!! Isn't it great??????????

I can't wait :D

Meanwhile, stupid DC comics has not sent me the latest issue of Batman... the one for October, I mean

WTF??????????

Batman: Hush

Mike's picture

Okay, so DC finally sent my Batman... but it was Broken City part 2

They might have sent me part one somtime and then I just didn't realize it... but my dad says it never came. WTF is up with that???????

Ric, if you read part 1, feel free to tell me what happened :?

Batman: Hush

Heather's picture

Mike, I'd say the shipment went missing somewhere. Rather than just sit around hoping it'll show up you'd be much better off contacting them and letting them know it didn't arrive. :)
