Chit-Chat 2
Well, with the death of Pope John Paul II, mom has decided that I'm suddenly an expert in Catholic Politics. So she felt compelled to ask me who the Preferitti are this time around. Naturally, didn't know, but did have a premonition about the name the next Pope will choose (my money is on Benedict XVI or Innocent XIV). Which led me to discover something interesting.
St. Malachy, in the 12th Century, supposedly made a Prophecy. He listed out the names of the last 112 popes, assigning to each a mystical title, which usually refered to their previous appointment, some personal trait, or an item of their reign. John Paul I's translated out of the half moon, with his reign lasting all of one month.
John Paull II was De Labore Solis or Of the labour of the sun; this is supposed to refer to JP II's birth being during an eclipse. It turns out that each of Malachy's mystical titles have all somehow come to pass - even during the Second Vatican Council in the 1960s, John XXIII, got a title which translated out Pastor and Sailor - and he was from Venice.
So, where does that leave us?
With Gloria olivae, or Glory of the Olive.
The Order of St. Benedict is claiming that this Pope will be theirs, for two reasons. One of them was that St. Benedict himself prophecied a pope from their order to lead the Church in a time of trouble. Second, that they are also known as the Olivertians.
Guess we'll get to see by the end of the month if St. Benedict was right. :)
(Interestingly enough, St. Benedict's prophecy makes Gloria olivae the last, and the addition of #112, Petrus Romanus, may well have been a 19th century addition)

Oops. Readinig through all this, I messed up John. For one thing, Vatican II was under a Paul - John's title was supposed to refer to the city he came from. My bad.

I knew it was the end of the world!
2012-- we're all done for.
