Okies dokies... i feel wierd calling so much attention here... but i'll just get my 'meeps' out of the way and get on with it, because i think some actual solid plans need to be made and accessable on the board if anythings going to happen.

I've been talking to a few peeps of late and it seems that late Oct/early Nov would be a bit difficult and more of an impossability due to school and classes or what not.

Apparently August might be a more desirable time to hold the cast party, and i just thought i'd open it up to the board for discussion (hehe, i feel like some wanky polititian) and get everyones opinion.

Personally, i don't really care when it is, because i think the more peeps that are able to come, the better it would be.

*returns to little black hole to recuperate from forwardness*

Hello, forget Australia, CP 2004 Montreal!!!!! sound good everyone!?!!

I have to say that I definately agree. Especially since it looks like I won't be able to make it to Melbourne CP is it's in Oct/Nov due to taking a 300-level lab science.

August is definately much more desirable. Having heard about Australian winters from Heather, it actually sounds like it will be quite nice at that time of year. And there's the possibility that by doing this, we have a bigger get together. :)

Personally, early August works best. One of the first two weeks.

CP 2004 - Melbourne

Early August? OMG, the weather will be disgusting... Eww, all cold and wet. I was under the impression we were actually looking at late Nov/early Dec to avoid the whole school/exams/etc thing. What happened to all those discussions?

And late spring is much, much nicer weather. Not too hot yet, but no longer yukky wet and wintry.

CP 2004 - Melbourne

Thing is also around Nov, Dec, it becomes harder to get plane seats. Plus, anyone who is at school has classes in Nov-Dec, and then usually exams till right before X-mas. If its anything like this year, I wouldnt be done school till Dec 17th, and then of course there is X-mas, and you cant leave before that.....

Again, HELLO MONTREAL !!!! Would be a cool place for the CP

For those considering Melbourne for the 2004 Cast Party (and sorry, Shaun, but we've already done the North American continent), Ally showed me this link today which while not always entirely accurate is close enough... I can identify with many of them (especially the bacon, eh Dave?)

Though it's quite wrong on a couple of points. The one that got me the most was the definition of a billion. Sorry, we don't follow the Yanks on that one. It's a million millions.

Exams in December?? Is this normal for the rest of you?? *blinks* In Australia, Uni's have exams in early Nov (for three years running I missed the Melbourne Cup 'cause I had an exam that day :x ) and by mid-Nov that's it. Done. Holidays until March. :D

So is it just Canada that has this weird 'right up until Christmas' timetable, or are the rest of you on more sensible schedules? :) I suppose what would be easiest is if all those who are committed to coming (ie, have FIRM plans to come) could put down what times they're available, so we can find one that fits.

Since Dave's employed, for him it's just a matter of having enough time to give warning that he's taking time off work. I know Robin's in the same sort of situation. What about those of you at school, though? Put your free times down here...

Only those who are committed to coming, though. There's no point putting up that you've got school until Christmas if you know you won't be able to make it to Australia regardless of whether you're free or not.

I'm planning on visiting my sister in Sydney sometime next year so chances are I could be in that part of the world around that time (we were hoping to spend xmas with them - them being my sister and brother-in-law) However, seeing as I'm now concidering going back to uni in September I have no idea if I will have the time spare at xmas - yes Heather, not only canada has exams in December - probably because it's OUR winter and only weird countries have summer vacations in December :P hehe, we have exams ALL year round, no discrimination there at all! So, I wouldn't make plans around me, if the gods are smiling our timing MAY turn out ok, if not...

CP LONDON BABY!! 2005!! :D

Heather,

I am drawing up my schedule right now. Here's what I find: I have to proctor a logic exam on Thursday the 18th, and have one on Saturday the 20th. My last day of classes is not until Decembet 12. The proposed schedule for Fall 2004 Semester has exams Dec 13 to Dec 18.

Problems with late November - works good for the Americans who have Thanksgiving off, except that well.... we kind of like to spend that with family. Not to mention the fact that, among the things I will be doing in Fall Semester are taking GREs, getting letters of recomendation and writting sample in order, filling out forms, and paying excruciating application fees for graduate school.

And what happens after? Well, that depends on things like if I take the Winter Term trip to Italy (which would put me there for 20 days) or another intensive winter course. Then classes start again in Feb.

As for the weather, well, fuck the weather. It's not the weather that makes the trip worthwhile, it's getting to get together with people who you are friends with.

Heather's picture

Ok, so you've told us when you aren't free... When are you free?
The option so far seems to be Jan - Oct, since you've only mentioned Nov and Dec. :)

CP 2004 - Melbourne

Kaarin's picture

I'm free in August, class starts in September. That should tell you everything else. Assume unavailable from late Jan-mid July. It would be nice to actually be able to build up my finances some, even if it means temporary credit card debt.

I would love to visit Montreal, but here's the deal...we have folks all over the world who can't leave their continent easily becasue of school/job/family/finances so the party has to go to them. We did No. America this year (you shoulda been there!) with LA (the logical first choice).

When we started this we had more Australians than Brits so it became the logical next choice. Now that we have more Brits (they are coming outta the woodwork) it seems appropriate that we do England next (Manchester in 2005 anyone?)

This was all pretty much decided in advance so that people would have YEARS to save up for the party. When you are talking about how much it costs to fly from the US to Australia (much less the UK) then all the advanced notice you can get helps.

Since this game was started by Canadians (thanks Nick!) and our recent windfall of Canucks, it seems reasonable that 2006 in Canada would be appropriate. So hold out that long and we will be crashing on your doorstep.

Of course you could also organize an FL Cast party in Montreal for 2004 if you were so inclined...

Hmmm...Australia. Let's see-No wait, i don't even need to think about it.

Nope, not gonna be able to make it :P

Now 2005...

Manchester? MANCHESTER? Bah :)

Southampton's not exactly the life of the UK either...

I say London, home of the Watcher's Council :D

And yup, classes in December. In fact, I only finish college about six days before Christmas and only have three weeks off, and then when we start in January there's our first set of exams EVEN THOUGH WE'VE ONLY BEEN ON THE COURSE LESS THAN SIX BLOODY MONTHS!!!

Yes, Matt's not a happy chappy about that...

Grrr...

Oh, Shaun. I'll got to the 2006 Montreal CP if you're payin ;)

**itsy bitsy teeny weeny whisper from the whatchacallit -- oh, yeah, "lurker"** London 2005; I could be there. Since my summer vacation this year has to be spent in Kankakee, Illinois with my mother, Melbourne isn't possible for me. London I could do, with, hopefully, a side to Ireland and Scotland where I'm told some of my ancestors were from.

I would prefer to have the CP Melbourne 2004 in August, but only because I doubt I can wait till November for a vacation! Haha... Also, due to budget constraints, I'm hoping to save a little money by staying with friends and they'd have graduated and gone home by November.

Of course, all that can worked around so I'm just stating my preference. Ultimately, I'll go ahead with whatever's decided but you guys have gotta let me know as soon as possible. You know what my work's like... I gotta forecast my leave in advance and I'm hoping to do so before anybody else does so I'm guaranteed it'll be approved.

Okies, so so far i think it's something like:

April: sqweee  (august pref)
Adam: sqweee  (august only)
Lou: sqwum? (that's a maybe... i think :P hehe)
Heather: sqweee  (nov pref... but looking doubtful)
Dave: sqweee  (unsure of pref)
Sher: grr  (ps. sqweee :D *waves excitedly* hows it going?)
Shaun: grr  *prods*
Robin: currently 'sqwum' but i'm counting on a 'sqweee' :P
Matt: grr  *eats solids infront of*
Saadia: grr  *also prods*

and just for the picky ones...

Amanda: sqweee (...i think this is generally a given :P )

These are the peeps i've currently got an idea of... and so far it's looking like: come 2005, there's gonig to be aLOT of sore asses in London, baby yeah

CP 2004 - Melbourne

Heather's picture

Well, my pref for Nov was purely based on time of year. I'll go whenever the majority can make it. If there are those who want to go and are committed to going but have limited window of opportunity date-wise, then we'll go on the dates they can make it.

At this stage, that looks like it'll be an August party.

CP 2004 - Melbourne

Evalyn Toussaint's picture

Well...I've got a pretty broad window of opportunity :) so it really doesn't bother me anywhos! i'm going to be experiencing every inch of weather we have down here next year, reguardless, hehe

Ok just for the record...

Yes I'm going I'd prefer November but am flexible (Which means it's looking like august...)

However I do need dates ASAP.

I work on a very small team and the sooner I book my leave time the better. (Otherwise someone else may have booked the days I need and I won't be able to go...)

*edit*
I've checked my leave availability and have therefor booked off 01.08.04 - 21.08.04 unfortunately I can't book any later off as it clashes with my team mates leave... sorry guys

Okies, so here how it currently stands, and correct me if i'm wrong:

CP Melbourne is taking place in August, sometime between Sunday the 1st and Saturday the 21st. The weekends there are: 7th/8th, 14th/15th -

chances are that you guys'll be staying down for more than just a weekend 8) but we have a three week span there to pick from, thanks to Robin :P hehe. (ps. don't worry robin, i'm finding it helps us find the date)

Input on this would be ver' welcome :D

and as far as attendingness goes:

SQWEEE
April
Adam
Heather
Dave
Robin
Me (Amanda)

er... sqwum...
Lou

grr
Ally
Shaun
Sher
Matt

...in conclusion - Lou: come to Melbourne :) you can spend a week in Sydney too.

By the by, I'm also in a semi-simular to situation to robin re: leave. The earlier I have dates to book off, the better. There are three (count em) of us left in Operations and we always try to keep two people in during the summer.

Well then, how about we make the weekend of the 7th/8th August the "official" Cast Party date? People can arrive a few days earlier if they so wish, and can stay as long as they like (or as long as budget/work/school will allow).

Amanda *waves back glad to not be forgotten* I'm fine. I'm having the same tooth issues as Chance; second oral surgery in 6 weeks -- two more to go.

For 2005, since I haven't really been obsessed with Britain since Twiggy, Mary Quant (cutest makeup a teenybopper could shoplift) and Carnaby Street, anywhere is good as the next. London or Birmingham makes me no nevermind. Of course, cheaper is better. All you had to do was say band and I'm there, having a sad and special affinity to rockers (you can ask the LABN OGs).

And for those who don't know me from a hole in the ground, I promise promise promise and swear swear swear I'm not just gonna take up space at LABN forever. I will post, Dave eschewed blockage notwithstanding, and earn a place at the 2005 CP.

Said Boojy to her family on regards to the 2004 cast party:

"Let me go!"

"We will not let you go!"

"Let me go!"

"We will not let you go!"

"Let me go!"

"We will not let you go!"

"Let me goooooooooo!"

but then they said no some more. For I'm just a poor girl from a poor family.

I as am very cheap and small person vote for cast party 2005 in LONDON BABY YEAH! because I'm cheap and could actually afford a train fair to London. PLUS London is cool and has many a sight to see. Although Birmingham has that ferris wheel that has a french-sight-seeing tape on it AND brummie accents, London still gets my vote. I'm sure the milennium eye is abigger ferris wheel. And cockny accents are fun too ^_^

So um... yah... LONDON! If you go to England and never go to London, you'll never forgive yourself... nothing beats the smell of the Thames in the morning.

Convenient??

Well, for the same reasons that nobody stayed in LA city, but rather had accommodations at Canoga Park (ie, nice and close to Sherlynn's house), I would hardly consider staying in or near the CBD to be 'convenient' for the Melbourne CP.

Of course, if anyone absolutely wants to stay in the CBD that's perfectly fine, but it will mean they'll have to do an awful lot of travelling to get down to the southern suburbs. Amanda's place is in Cheltenham, and Dave and I will be staying in Rosebud. At this stage it's unclear whether the actual Cast Party per se will be at one place or the other, but inquiries that Amanda and I have been making so far re: accommodation are for places that more or less bisect those two locations (ie Mornington, Mt Eliza, etc).

I have bookmarks on my US computer (not here...) of places Amanda and I dug up one evening together, that I believe I've shown to both Adam and Robin, who so far are the only firm takers who have said they need accommodation.
