Ok, this is like Movie Recommendations, except is for music. If you have that particular CD or albumn that you feel everybody else just must know about, for good or bad reasons, post it!

I, myself, bought Longview's Mercury yesterday. 8O Oh, man it is sooo cool! I totally recommend it, in fact i insist you go out and buy it! Think of Cold Play meets Travis with a bit of U2 thrown in for good measure and you can't go far wrong!

I don't know if they've gone abroad yet, but if you live in the UK then it's well worth the £10.99 at HMV (£8.49 for me...yay student discount!). And what's even more cool is that they come from down south here. One of them even comes from Eastleigh! Just goes to show I wasn't the only decent thing to come from the South of England :P

...

Besides the invasion of Normandy, of course...*runs away and hides from the big politically correct/diplomatic/you get the idea stick* ;) hehe...

oooh, sounds like well worth the listen...i like travis

i bought a few in the last weeks:

Kill Bill Vol. I Soundtrack...Tarantino's taste in music is killer, but the soundtrack is great for all the spaghetti western/Morricone-like music, if u like chilling to that stuff, its great!

David Usher- Hallucinations: a canadian guy, but really really dark and moody...his voice is like a lull...the songs are ALL good, especially his remake of Manic Street Preachers' "If You Tolerate This...", its mood music really, but his voice and lyrics have a sort of haunting tone to them

The White Stripes- Elephant: i know its kinda old (last spring i think), but i just bought it and was surprised that Seven Nation Army wasnt the only good song...all songs are great...its a throwback to Brit-60s, 70s Kinks rock...really good if u like punk/kinks/brit rock...the guitars are really good and the drumming is insane, especially when u realize that its a girl (she can seriously rank up there with the guys)...and the way they recorded it is great too, straight to 8-track and then onto the album, no electronic...so some old rock is finally coming back

Music Recommendations

Kieran's picture

oh yeah, i forgot...hehe, supposed to be my fave of the bunch i bought :?

Dido- Life For Rent: this woman's voice is just too damn sexy and the music really complements it...I like it better than No Angel, and it is really great for nights or just when u feel like relaxing or chilling or...

Music Recommendations

Disposable_Hero's picture

Can't say I'm a fan of Dido, but i heard the Whitestripes was a good album...

Oh, and if the soundtack to Kil Bill is anything like the film it should be awesome!

Music Recommendations

Tarix Conny's picture

I saw the video for "no angel" by dido...think that was the one with DB in it rite? Man, did he look fat...or is it just me?

Music Recommendations

MrDave's picture

Dido's first album didn't impress me at all. But White Flag is an awesome song and the few other tracks I've heard show that this album is definately a step up the artistic ladder for Dido.

Yes, DB is in the video and ol' Angel has been packing on the pounds over the years. He's losing weight again (judging from recent episodes of Angel) but it's not fast and it makes for a humorous look at the problems with casting a mortal in an immortal role.

A well...LABN has that problem licked. Kill 'em before they get old and fat. ;)

hehe We also have the advantage of being able to choose photographs from years ago, when the actors for our characters WERE still young and trim. I'd hate to see what a current pic of Josette Simon would look like - she'd be well in her 40's by now.

I will go out on a limb and recomend ANY of the arists on Magnatune. That's right, it's a record label which is actually not evil.

Currently, I've bought all three of Beth Quist's CDs and an ensemble called Joglarassa. All very good, very high quality. The problem is deciding who to buy next. :D

The Darkness 'Permission To Land'. A really kick-ass album! Great guitar bits in it and the lyrics sometimes make you laugh, sometimes make you wonder what the singers are doing to make their voice go that high, sometimes make you wonder what they've been smoking and always make you want to sing along! (accompanied by an air guitar, naturally :P)

Music Recommendations

music? - if you had to choose - ac/dc or the darkness... there is no contest - the originals are always the best.

also - miss black america (not female, or black or american) last time i checked but tha war long time ago.
and antsalon, never got signed alas alack but pure genii anyhoo - do a google search if you like strange indie music with fab drummin and again... not ants or people you would find vaguely near a salon.

and now my computers telling me it's going to crash - ohohoh nonononon

Listening to more stuff at Magnatune, I am going to include anything by Ehren Starks in my recomendation.

And let me highly recomend this label in general again. I've not heard anything BUT good music from them. And they're not the RIAA.

OK, you've given a music freak an excuse to rant.

I personally love dido, so I will be checking out life for rent. As for white stripes *mutter mumble grumble* They do have a knack for irritating the life out of me (especially when your in your art GCSE mock and all that is going on in your head is "bom bom bom bom bom the hardest button to button bom bom bom") The darkness rock with avengance! I force fed them to my sister until she bought their album.

Um...

Smashing Pumpkins! They saved me from the whitestripes during my art exam *sighs*.

Placebo - recently have been on a placebo binge (sp?), but they really are quite cool. my faves are Teenage Angst, Pure Morning, 36 Degrees and this picture.

DIR EN GREY!!!! Yus, this is one of the crazy japanese bands that Aluss n me rant about FAR too often, but still, they are reallly cool! very alternative, and quite an aquired taste, but once you're in, you're hooked. I would recommend Cage, Bottom of death valley, Drain away, Umbrella and mazohyst of decadance.
They're quite heavey, and most of it is in japanese, and if it isn't, you wish it was. But please give them a go!

My Dying Bride. I got into these like yesterday! Really moving stuff. Although there isn't that much vocalage and what there is is mainly spoken rather than sung, the backing music is relly lovely, with lots of strings. Try For my fallen angel, I really liked it.

I REALLY tried to minimalise this because othersie I woudl still be here five hours later ranting about various bands that no one lieks or no one has heard of. Woo music! *confetti*

Ja, spiffy-much song! But I like more or less all of them! and this is not aided by the hotness of a certain Brian Molko. *snaps out of it*

Also, I CAN'T believe that when I was listing Dir en grey songs, I missed out "ain't afraid to die" which si a really BEAUTIFUL song. And for ONCE in dir en grey history, doesn't involve lots of depressing concepts. Its really lovely, and shows off what Kyo (vocalist) can do when he's not sounding like he's vomiting... he has a REALLY lovely voice! Also cool instrumental solo! And on top of all of this, one of my freaky Pop friends really likes it!
Go d/l!

grrrrrr, rolling stone officially sucks....after omitting great albums from their list of essential albums years ago, and the travesty that was the greatest guitarists ever (Joni Mitchell in, John Frusciante in and Joe Satriani out, Slash out, Yngwee Malmsteen out, Eddie Van Halen #56 wtf?!?!?!?!?!?) they've decided to release a 500 greatest albums of all time...

not to disappoint, Rolling Stone did a bang-up suck job once again...sometimes one wonders how these people actually get jobs

Pet Sounds by the Beach Boys number 2 album?????????????? (damn, man...beach boys)

hey, i like the beatles, they're good, but come on, seriously, 4 albums in the top ten, a top ten that does not include Led Zep, a band who trailblazed the way for the metal scene and hard rock as we know it...innovators, these guys, every single member was an essential and genius...the same guys whose songs pervade commercials and allow pre-pubescent boys to hang onto girls' arses during those school dances longer than any song ull find now, constantly being recopied...only peaked at #29?!?!?!?!?!?! lower than Nirvana's Nevermind, which did nothing for punk, grunge but kill it in 3 years...u want a great Nirvana album, In Utero or Unplugged in NYC, and even then, they aren't better than any Zep, Sabbath, Stones album...

the Kinks aren't high up....

this is more like the 500 greatest POP albums of all time, albums that havent influenced much...

on a less hard rock note, Aretha Franklin only peaked @ 83!!!!! whereas MJ slied his way onto 20

hehe, i guess this' ll give Guitar World another opportunity to bash Pop ROlling Stone :P

I recomend all of System of a Down's albums. They're a very different, blending "carnie" music with heavy metal. "Mr. Jack", a song off their new album Steal This Album, is dark with catchy lyrics (if you are able to understand Serj, the lead singer). They have some of the best bass solos out there. Some lyrics get you thinking, while others make you say "What in the name of all things sacred were they smoking when they wrote this?". I love this band so much and one of these days I'll see them in concert. :D

If you like System of a Down, you'll like Rage Against the Machine, who have been out longer than System. Sure, their politics aren't the best in the world, but their music is great (I love their song "Know Your Enemy"). They are rock mixed with rap a little.

AFI is another good band. My friend here in the States loves them and she's gonna see them soon. They were on the Warped Tour the summer. For non-U.S. residents, that's a punk rock band tour.

Now for something completely different. I have been listening to a lot of Russian techno as of late. Tatu, of coarse, is one of the artists I've been listening to. Another one I recomend is Ivanushki International. Their song "Kykla" is really addicting and beautiful at the same time.

Okay, I just woke up, I'm still tired, and I'm spent.

Im bored so i'll list the stuff im listening to lately since im not listen to the same old stuff anymore:

Billy Talent, awsome Canadian band I dont think I dislike a single song on their album.

Audioslave, Soundgarded + Rage Against the Machine = GOOD! some of the stuff is kinda bland but most of it is very very good.

My stupid asian friend have me listening to Jay Chow, which despite the fact that I can barely understand a word of Mandarin though I can sing along with a few songs. I dunno the names of any of his songs or albums but he's pretty good if you like catchy non english music lol.

Nickleback, Their first album wasent my thing but I was really into hard stuff at the time. But their second album is supriseingly good got some really nice tracks on it.

Everything else I listen to is either really obscure or so lame I dont want to let anyone know I listen to it lol.

Um... to get make on the subject of music recomendations. :)

Last night I just listened again to a rather sublime piece: Le Nozze di Figaro, composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. I really have a hard time recomending Mozart enough - the man was after all a musical genius, an excellent example of a talented composer - but this Opera is enough to just blow you away.

Music Recommendations

Heather's picture

I don't mind the odd bit of Mozart - hell, the one piece of opera I sang for the "Don't Bring It, Sing It" thread was from The Magic Flute. But Bizet's The Pearl Fishers has to be one of my favourite operas, along with Puccini's Tosca. I saw a recording of that once on TV where they'd actually gone to the three locations in Rome at the appropriate times to film the opera. Wow.

For a lighter tone, try the comic operetta Die Fledermaus (The Bat) by Johann Strauss.

Ok, I could crap on about opera for ever... I'll go back into my box now...

Just some music i wanted to recommend....usually i'm not much with the recommending as i don't listen to anything particular, just bits and peices...

but lately i have been listening to Nora Jones and her latest album...forgot wats it called but its really good...nice and soothing to your nerves...

Also on a nerve soothing note another song to listen to is "Touched" by Vast....very nice :D bwt can anyone tell me where and when it was played on one of the angel epi's cause i still can't figure that one out....

Blue by Angie Hart is also very good, and this one was played in season 7 of buffy on one of the epi's...can anyone guess which one that is :D

Music Recommendations

Evalyn Toussaint's picture

Sarah McLachlan is awsome. have been listening to her a bit of late. She sang that final song they played just after buffy killed angel in season 2 - "Full of Grace" ver' nice. Though i must say, it can really change the mood of things: i was looking through photos i'd taken of all my tafe friends after we'd finished, no music, and it was just like... "cool! i have photos!" then looked through it again while the music was playing and was getting a bit teary eyed (both me and my friend that was over, hehe)

Well, nice to this thread still exists. But... as many of you know, there is but a single reality TV show I like: American Idol, which is the American version of the British Pop Idol. Why mention this?

Because I finally heard Clay Aiken's first CD, Measure of a Man. All I will say is get it. Quickly. Clay is wonderful, though I must admit that I do wish he would do more of the crooning that got me to like him in the first place.

Also let me add James Darren to the list of recomendations. He's got a number of CDs out, but I can recomend This One's From the Heart and Because of You with a clean concience.

For Magnatune artists: Beth Quist is absolutely magnificent. Soon as I heard her, I bought the downloads of all three of her albums - and I can't wait for number four to come out. Kourosh Zolani and Ehren Starks are also very good if you have a new agey taste in music. Shiva in Exile has one of the most interesting blends I've ever heard; Solace is absolutely wonderfull as well. Joglaresa, Ensemble Sreteniye, and Tim Rayborn are wonderful producers of early music.

Ah hell. The one bad thing I can say about Magnatune is that the vast majority of the arists are good and makes you want to buy the entire site.

Bought the Lost Prophet's new Start Something yesterday on a whim (After falling in love with Last Train Home). It's actually pretty damned good (not a word Jamie :P )...I was mightly impressed with it but also chuffed at the £9.77 well spent. Wasn't a great fan of their other stuff, but I really liked this. Should help alleviate the boredom that is coursework...

i highly recommend Roger Clyne and The Peacemakers. This is a band out of Arizona that consists of Roger Clyne, formerly of The Refreshments, and some members of the late, great Gin Blossoms. This Arizona style is something I love and these guys are great at it.

Okay I recently got a slew of new music to add to my collection and I thought I'd recommend the pick of the bunch-

I really want to recommend the new album by Travis - 12 Memories for anyone who's a fan of the current moody indie-type music it's really good, I'd go so far as to say it's on par if not better than their previous album The Invisible Band though it is a tad more maudlin with very few up beat tracks than in the previous two albums. Still there are some really good songs perfect for chilling on a sunday morning or late on a night with your mates. Particularly the tracks Quicksand, The Beautiful Occupation, Love will Come Through and Walking Down The Hill - the sound is smooth, mellow yet also memorable enough to have you humming long after the music has ended - that's my excuse anyway hehe.

I also want to add my two bucks worth on White Flag by Dido - yeah it's been out a while now, I only just got it for xmas but it's great, if you haven't heard it, it's well worth shelling out the £8.99 on CDWOW - shame about the new court ruling that's hiked their prices up (used to be a mere £6.99!!) ah well. Still, well worth the money for songs like Don't Leave Home and Do You Have a Little Time? - this is one Dido fan who will be eagerly awaiting the lovely Ms Armstrong's third album.

Secondly, I want to recommend the debut album by Katie Melua - Call Off the Search it's tempting to call her a Norah Jones wannabe and in some respects you could be right (they share a similar bluesy-jazz influence) However, her style is much different, more melodic, less reflective, perhaps with a lighter, frivilous tone than the talented Norah (whose second album is due out soon). This is another 'bubble bath' album to relax by with top tracks such as The Closest Thing to Crazy, Blame it on the Moon, I Think It's Gonna Rain Today and Lilac Wine (just a few of my faves) really the whole album is worth checking out and I think we'll be seeing more from this talented singer/songwriter in the next year.

The third I want to plug is Absolution - by Muse. The music is as always with Muse a rollercoaster of traditional mixed with the electrical and unforgiving lyrics - "take all the time you need and I'll compensate your greed with broken hearts I'll sell your memories for 15 pounds per year" The bass and drum work totally rocks, especially on tracks such as Apocalypse Please and Time Is Running Out. Each song is something different from rock to outbreaks of metal and some classical leanings - yet everything is so tied together in that unmistakable Muse style you don't notice - or plain don't care. For a Muse fan like myself it's a must-have and if you liked the previous Origin of Symmetry (also another favourite of mine - worth the pay out just for tracks like Bliss, New Born and Space Dementia) album it's well worth a look.

Oh well that's me done for now hehe :D

Ok, umm..."bought", yes..."bought" two more new albums recently.

First; Evanescence's (man, that's a bugger to spell...heh funny story actually. On kazaa there's a file by a band called 'Evan Essence') Fallen. It's probably been mentioned before (and you'll probably be surprised I don't already have it) but it is VERY good. Moody, but still good. Well worth...umm..."buying". Not too fond of the ballardy version of My Immortal, but the others (most notably: Haunted, Taking Over Me, My Last Breath and of course Bring Me to Life and Going Under...actually that doesn't leave many others besides heh) are great.

Secondly; The Neon Handshake by Hell is for Heroes. Some good old punk rock, but that has some classy tunes to go with it. Slow Song and Retreat are just awesome. I Can Climb Mountains, Few Against the Many and You Drove Me To It absaloutely kick ass. Probably not a good ablum for the more...umm...'soft' (;)) of you out there, but don't get me wrong it's not as bad as stuff like Slipknot. I believe Jamie'd like it :)

i recently just bought two cd's which i find totally fantastic ( :? oh di, im really watching too much naked chef...its not enough i use flat, mate, cheers, and brilliant @ will, i accentuate every sentence with fantastic now...damn u jamie oliver) anyways, btw, does anyone know if UK Winter Chill compilation is any good, the cd looks mighty enticing, but i really cant find any reviews about it...

so here goes...

the first album, "Talkie Walkie" is by Air....since this french duo sits high and mighty in my top ten, it was a no-brainer that i was really really really looking forward to their latest release and buy it without question...much to my surprise, its such a fantastic album...they added in quite a few lyrics more than usual for them, which, doesn't lessen their sound in any way...if anything, the songs have become even more cooler...this is definitely a chill cd...when u wanna get in a certain mood, mostly at night, this is definitely it...but its their distinctive melancholic electronic, jazzy sound that is somewhat intoxicating...if u guys wanna "sample" any songs, i definitely suggest "Surfing on a Rocket", "Cherry Blossom Girl" and "Alone in Kyoto" (which appears at the end credits of Lost in Translation...their second time working with the lovely Sofia Coppola, the first time being the Virgin Suicides)

the second album is slightly more upbeat...it's "The Richest Man in Babylon" by Thievery Corporation, again another duo...the album is kinda like a diaspora, it encompasses alot of sounds from around the world...not as cool as Air, but definitely something to listen to while having a drink and chatting it up with some friends...a good track is "The Outernationalist"
