Description:
Nikolai’s appearance is generally not memorable, with a small exception: he has an evil smirk that most people tend to remember. His dress after ‘retiring’ is able to tend towards either pants and blazer, or jeans and t-shirt, depending on situation. Brown eyes and black hair.
Nikolai is played by Ed Wasser.
Background:
Born in Leningrad in 1971, Nikolai’s father was service worker who was an abusive father. Nikolai dreamed of escape one day, of getting as far away from his father as possible. Fate smiled on him in 1989 – excelling in school despite his childhood, he was initially recruited to join the KGB.
Despite the changes being instituted by Mikhail Gorbachev, Nikolai was soon discovered to have the right mindset to serve as an assassin by using his position to extract revenge on his father, Aleksander for years of abuse. Nikolai filed a false denunciation against his father, accusing him of disloyalty. To ensure the state police would act, he intimidated an old family friend to file a similar denunciation. Realising the threat of exposure, two days later, Nikolai took what he saw as a necessary step to protect himself: planning and carrying out the murder.
It brought him to the attention of a KGB Colonel, Lavrenti Vladimirovich Saborov. Saborov made a deal: he would go unpunished for his crimes, in exchange for becoming an assassin. Nikolai agree, spending 2 years in intensive training under Saborov’s watchful eye. One day in 1991 brought it all to an end, when an attempt at a coup was launched against Gorbachev.
Saborov’s enemies took the opportunity to move against him. Nikolai responded the only way he could think of: he fled, fearing Saborov would turn on him. Nikolai found himself without any legally marketable skills. Moving into Eastern Europe, by the end of the year, he accepted a contract to kill a small gang leader.
That contract proved to be the start of a long and profitable career as a professional assassin. Nikolai developed an odd sense of justice, and found his opinion of mankind on a downward spiral, by his contact with organised crime. He kept accepted contracts only on certain kinds of targets. These targets were exclusively those we might consider ‘evil’ – gangsters, drug dealers, corrupt officials. A sort of pride in his work developed, to the point where he did everything to take out the target and only the target.
His first “big” contract was accepted in 1995. The mission resulted in his becoming hired for more and more important jobs. By 2003, Nikolai had enough money to retire on – and despaired of any ability to change the world. Working only for money, he decided to retire to Los Angeles. During this time, he went simply by the name ‘Andropov Andreievich’ to conceal his identity. A part of his misses the excitement of making a professional kill, which was partly why he chose LA – subconsciously, he still wants to come back out of retirement.
Nikolai has encountered one or two demons in his time and a vampire, but has managed to rationalise them away. He has no knowledge of the occult.
Season Three/Midseason ~
Nikolai became friends with Natasha Brookes, and so wound up on the interdimensional expedition to G'rnatha. This was his first major introduction to the occult.
Upon returning home, he discovered that Lavrenti Sabarov was in the area and hunting him. With the help of Damen Kirk, Nikolai survived the attempt on his life, but not without cost: the Xangyarj L'Than merged with him during her death.
Powers
Nikolai is an empath. He can pick up the emotional state of a person, and even has begun to notice that all places have an ambient 'emotional feel' to them which people leave behind. At the moment, he is beginning to be able to differentiate between subtle differences in emotions.
Items
Nikolai still has his old assassin equipment, being a garote, disassembleable rifle, and a .45 with silencer.
Also noteworthy is his Monte Carlo - he lost the original on the G'rnathan expedition (just after making the last payment) this one was created for him out of G'rnathan technology. The result is the following:
Armour: Nikolai's car has the armour of a Monitor, meaning that it can stop most small arms fire. Due to the more efficient fuel system, this gives it about the same weight.
Limited Intelligence: Because it would not occur to the Creator whose name cannot be spelled to create a device without a brain, the car has a limited amount of intelligence - about that of a horse. It has been taught (off-camera) some limited amount of driving techniques, and is capable of taking over.
