Hello LABNers!

Let me preface by saying that I know that I haven't posted as much as one is supposed to to be part of a collaborative community. This has pretty much been the case since the beginning of the year, save for my (brilliant) origin of the Cadre storytelling. I apologize. You all mean more to me than I can express, but I feel I'm giving you short shrift on the collaborative part. DON'T PANIC; I'M NOT BOWING OUT like some other brilliant writers do. This is just a preamble to something I'm gonna need your help on.

I am applying for a writing fellowship with Disney/ABC. It's a year long fellowship for not a small amount of money; less than I'm making now but I can make do. In order to apply, one has to submit a writing sample. One can do either a screenplay, half-hour sitcom or hour long episodic, or submit a play.

Here's the thing -- the hour long episodic has to be a spec script for a network or cable series on the air -- 40-60 pages. It cannot be submitted before June 1, but it has to be postmarked before June 27. Time is waaaay short, especially since I have nothing on tap.

It's my plan to write an Angel script. I'd like to use the template provided by Drew (Derek Park) re how Buffy scripts are written found here:

http://www.latenightgames.com/node/188

and I'd really like your help in sorta "breaking" a story as described in the article sorta kinda. The help I need is not as deep as Jane's article, but I want to bounce and confab ideas with you brilliant and talented people.

Once the story is broken, I'll go off and write it. In other words, I want to suck you guys dry for your ideas, give you no money and no credit, and try to win this thing and perhaps give my old (but good looking) ass a new path in life.

My friend, a certain television director extraordinare (his credits include Smallville -- the Dark Clark episode , Soul Food, Dark Angel -- he's on the DVD giving comments and such, Taken, among many others) has agreed to read and give me notes on what I produce. Oddly, he's not a television watcher, looks on TV directing as his "day job" and has never in his life seen either Buffy or Angel. He wants to do features. It's my plan to write something that he, someone who isn't familiar with the Buffyverse, will find compelling.

So, will you guys help me? If so, please read the Jane Espenson article. I may or may not use your ideas. Also, you have to agree that helping me to "break" the story does not constitute lawsuits in the future. The writing will be mine; I just want to use you -- but in a nice way. If you feel that you cannot, in good conscience help -- that's ok too. I've thought about this long and hard and don't find it to be "cheating." I feel that it's using my resources, as any writer would. I reiterate -- I will be writing the thing so I don't really want suggestions re that -- that wouldn't be kosher.

I will be online on MSN tomorrow Sunday, June 1, 2003, at 6:30 p.m. PDT. If anyone is interested, meet me there.

I am posting the link so that anyone who's Stateside who may want to submit a script can sabotage my chances with my blessing. Unfortunately, Offlanders can't apply unless they have a work visa.

This will take up ALL of my time, so Parasol and Chinaka will have to continue to languish which is the reason for the guilt-ridden preamble.

I hope to see you tomorrow.

Love you all.

Sherlynn

If you read down the list of past writers hired during this time, you will find Jane Espensen's name ('92-'93)

You are in good company. I'll be there. You might consider using the Chatrooms as opposed to messenger.

I'll be there, adding my two cents' worth. Aussie cents, that is, so it's only about 1 1/3 US cents. Sorry, tough. Crap exchange rate.

I think the whole thing sounds terribly exciting - and if you need time to yourself while we're in LA, I'm sure Dave and I at least can find something to do to occupy ourselves while you lock yourself away with your word processor. :)

Well, y'all. I failed miserably at the screenplay. I couldn't get my mind around the concept. Though the cast party fell in the middle of it, I can't use that as an excuse. *sob*

So, I'm gonna try for next year's fellowship.

Thanks for all your help and I'll try not to fail next year.

All things come to those who wait. I am convinced you will produce a far better story in one year's time as opposed to cranking something out in such a short week.

*big hugs of support*

Tomorrow marks the anniversary of my finding LABN.

I was relatively new to Buffy. F/X played a marathon sometime around the Christmas/New Year holidays. I had seen it before, but never really latched on. F/X chose episodes that were special and in time order. I sat all day and night watching. I was hooked. I started taping.

Because I was all obsessed with Buffy now, I started trolling the web. I used to post quite often at the Buffy Cross & Stake and every once and again at the Bronze Beta.

While at the Bronze Beta, I saw a post by Loulie (aka Lou) wanting to know if anyone wanted to play an RPG. She explained the construct of the site, posted the link and I went there.

The whole 4th of July weekend (Independence Day from the oppressive boot of King George *flag waving for Heather's benefit and irritation --hehehehehe*!!!), I spent reading the whole site. Parasol came to me in a flash and I had a 10 page history written -- then my computer crashed.

The upshot is that I finally submitted my idea and was heartily welcomed. This post is for no other reason than to mark the 1 year anniversary of finding you people. You've often been my lifeline.

What am I? Some sort of interchangeable soul you can profess love to and not know who they are? What is this? The 70s.

One of these days, Parasol'll pop up and hopefully, then you'll know who I am.

'Til then, thanks for the love.
