As far as the name, it is cool. I do, however, wonder if he can actually quote Iago? Hell, if he continues with the Shakespear references, I'll like this dood just fine.

Well, perhaps because - as Dave (our Dave) said - it was a name that would 'supplant' his real name, whatever it was. :) He didn't know his name, felt out of place, and learned that Iago meant 'the supplanter'. And since he was newly awakened and had no memory of the sort of person he'd been, that old personality was effectively supplanted... hence Iago.
Or maybe he chose it simply because he thought it sounded cool.
Or maybe he picked the first name he saw and there was a poster for Othello on the wall, but he thought Othello was too much so took the next name mentioned.
Or maybe someone thought he was a homeless person and threw some money at him, saying "'ere ya go," and he thought they'd said 'Iago'.
Or maybe he woke up, wondered who he was, and it was the first word that popped into his mind, and even though somehow he knew it wasn't really his name, it seemed as good as any?
*shrugs* I'm not sure it matters... if it's relevant, I'm sure he'll tell us. :)

in Shakespeare's Otthello he was the antagonist.
As the Supplanter it could be the name that "replaced" his old name.

I think yes, also. This is much better. The fleshing out makes the character more complex and gives him a place to start, I feel. Good job.
As for the name thing, well, yeah it should probably be changed.

Please, no. We've already had one variant of Kate (to Cate) when Jamie tried to insert an old girlfriend into his plot with the name Kate. So we're already at two versions of the same name. I don't think we could take another. I'd really like to see a whole different name. I mean, come on - there are literally thousands of names to choose from!

I like what you've done fleshing out the backgroun. Kate is also the name of a character from 1st season Angel (The Cop). So there is not only a major PC from the game but that connection to really muck things up.
Cathy is basically the same name but truncated a different way.

Yes, this is much more like it. There's enough there now to get a feel for the character.
I especially like the drama implicit in that last sentence - that Iago was obsessed with finding out about his past until his girlfriend finally had enough and gave him an ultimatum. I can just imagine that scene... nasty.
Though I have to side with Lou on the Kate thing. If the girlfriend is to appear in the story at all, it would be far less confusing if she didn't happen to have the same name as one of our major PC's. I know in real life people do tend to wind up with the same names (for instance, if you come on board we'll have two Daves), but for the purposes of storytelling most writers give all their characters unique names. There are plenty of nice female names out there... it doesn't have to be Kate (or Natasha, or Amanda, or Alice, etc). http://www.babycenter.com/babyname/ or http://www.babynames.com/V5/index.php?content=n_search&go1=Go are both good sites for finding names if you're having trouble thinking of one (I know I'm terrible at names, so I use these sites frequently).
Other than the girlfriend's name, however, I think Iago's looking like a good candidate for inclusion in the game. I'm curious to learn if he already knows of the existence of the supernatural, or whether he'll discover that as he goes along. It'll be fun to see his reaction to his first vampire... hehe. :)

I like this much better, though I'd have to say choose a different name for your girlfriend than Kate ;) (sheesh guys come on, this is the second time! there are like, THOUSANDS of names out there, use them! :P) But aside from that there are encouraging things in this revised profile, I especially like the Sherlock Homes aspect. I can see this character easily finding a way into our group. :)

Lol, well, even if I peril of being banned from this game, i have to say that i like Ben Affleck too. I just wish he got his hair in disorder from time to time.

Having no memory of his life prior to waking up in LA one cold rainy night Iago is a blunt person and very sarcastic but also coldly pragmatic in all aspects of life except for with regards to his past, an area which haunts him. The thing which scares him most is the plain gold wedding ring, was he married? But furthermore if he was married to this unknown woman could he go back to her (and his children if he had any) even now that he's going strong with Kate.
Iago, now assuming that he is nearing his mid thirties, is a successful private detective hoping to expand his business into the dark world of LA.
history: Iago found himself lying naked in the rain on the cold streets of LA almost five years ago. Everything before that moment in his life is a mystery to him.
In the years following Iago slowly discovered himself as he is now. He grew to realise that he has a skill in finding the truth from people and analysing situations in an almost sherlock holmes manner. Realising the economic potential of these traits Iago set about creating a small business for himself in the private hire detective business.
Iago spent the first year of what he now calls his "second life" on the streets of LA slowly building himself up from nothingness. Drifting in and out of small jobs Iago wound up as a secretary in a small lawyers firm. From here Iago slowly learned about his ability to destinguish between the truth and a lie. In the early stages of learning how to use this gift Iago discovered that one of the lawyers boyfriends was cheating on her. One thing led to another and now four years later Iago and Kate have been happily together for the past few years.
With a great deal of support from Kate Iago began to capitalise on his unique gifts. However, despite their apparent domestic bliss Iago could never escape the constant nagging urge at the rear of his skull to figure out who he was in his "previous life". On the night Iago was woke in LA there were two prostitutes murdered in the building just over the street from where he was found. The women had both been visited by a man fiting his description for several weeks however nothing else linking him to the crime scene could be found. Iago has no finger prints or DNA on record with the FBI and as far as his searches with the police have proven there are no outstanding missing persons cases that match his description.
That, however, was last year, the last time he looked into his previous life, a search which consumed nearly a complete two years of his life, since then Kate has given him the stark choice between her or his past.
items: plain gold ring on wedding finger, the only thing found on his body when he woke. One jeweller estimated that the ring was worth just upwards of $5000 and traced it to a jewellers in Switzerland.
powers: More a skill than a power Iago can tell a lie from the truth with any human almost instantly.
Iago also has a pre-emptive knowledge of when someone is going to attack him, coming in the form an image in his head just seconds before it actually happens he is often able to avoid being struck by most human oppents.

I pretty much agree with most of what's been said here. I think there's definetly a degree of potential with this concept, but I wouldn't accept the player unless they were willing to provide more detail on their character be it personality or background (or both hehe) like Heather said, five sentences isn't enough to cut it quite frankly.
On this obsession with the actor? I don't really think it's relevent, at least not enough to cause such debate :P *thanks god I'm not Ben Affleck for fear of random floggings from LABNighters* Besides, the rate people are getting through NPC actors, what choice is left? :wink:

About the poll: I really wanted to see if anyone else wamed up to this character before I posted one. Its online now.
The room?: We have room. If they merit it. We will MAKE room if the person warrants it. We have done so in the past and will do so again. I don't mind making a pettitioner work for it (an initial post or a rewrite) if he/she shows potential.
Peronally, I think that the argument "No room" is the weakest argument for turning down someone who has talent. If we truely have no room why are we carrying people who aren't writing?

Ok, I agree this has potential, but before I could put my stamp of approval on it, it has to be delved into deeper. We need to know more before we can decide if we want to swell our ranks yet again. At this point, with this many players on one board, we have to constantly ask ourselves as new submissions come in, "Is this worth integrating?" Because, frankly, we can't afford to be lenient on this front any longer. We've simply grown too large to accept anything but the best. (I am hating myself for the way this sounds.)
Ok, on the Ben Affleck question, which I feel I must sound off on, come on guys, give him a break. We all should be able to form our own individual opinions, and frankly this Affleck bashing smacks of bandwagoning in my opinion. Ben Affleck is not Bennifer. He never was. He made a stupid, stupid mistake in his relationship and media coverage over the last year, but I don't believe he's an arrogant SOB, or that he sucks at all. He's actually an actor I've liked in the past. He's not, you know, the greatest of our time, but he's not Carrot Top either. And as for that, I really feel whatever person you choose to be the face of your character should have very little to do with the actor, as it's really about the face. And I can't go on, as I have to get off the computer now, but I see that I too talked more about Mr. Affleck than the submission. *Sigh*

Actually, I'd like to see a LOT more detail. The past five years haven't been covered in much depth. Like Dave, I'm interested to know how much Iago has dug up about his own past life. After all, since he discovered he's such a hotshot detective, wouldn't it be the first thing you'd want to delve into?
The sketchy bits we do have, however are enough to make him worth considering. But personally, before I can cast a 'yes' vote (and btw Dave - where the heck is the poll?) I'd like to see a bit more than five sentences about his background.
And as for the Ben Affleck thing? Get over it, guys. Not everyone likes the same actors (and frankly I can't stand Ben Affleck myself). But for LABN it's more to determine the kind of look we're going for than a representation of acting skill (or lack thereof). If he wants Ben, fine. He's not taken with another pc or npc, so he's fair game.

And about the whole Ben Affleck matter, I say that if he want´s him then let him have him. If he thinks he is fit for the role,I don´t really have anything to say against it. Plus I sort of remembers when I sent my submission and a few disliked that I chose Keanu Reeves as my actor.....

Actually i like the character, the characteristics and all, and really like it. The only thing i don't like about it is slight lack in the detail dept....perhaps a bit more detail? also another thing, which is a major for me that i don't like about the character is Ben Affleck, WTF!!! i have to take Meghan's side on this one, the guy is an arogant SOB!!! but thats my thought, and if the player likes Ben, he can have him....
lol overall i give it a thumbs up and a bit request for another detail submittion perhaps, if thats ok...

/The fact the amnesia is at this point, five years old. He's forged a new life, and there are lots of fun plot hooks that can come from this.
/Iago - must admit to liking the name.

/Shoddy background for past five years. I can understand not going into detail on the rest for us to find out later in the story, but at least knowing about the new life is a must.

ok now his submission isnt very long, and at first glance i was like "This is going to suck" but then after reading, I changed my mind.
despite the kinda cliche "Dont remember my past" (its be done in LABN) I think itsgood. He doesnt have super powers which is different, and the kid obviously writes really well. On top of this, he took Ben Affleck (which shows he has taste :P (sorry Megs)... Really, I'd have to say yes.
final thought, I dislike the name Iago, I just cant help but think of an annoying parot.

From the first moment I read this character, Tarix was the first thing popped into my head. But, like Dave, I went on reading. I liked how he etsablished the character into the modern world and has settled him into a pretty normal life.
Then there's Ben. Mr. Ben FUCKING Affleck. I've been having a problem with him as of late. Talking shit about the Yankees (American baseball team). He said and I quote "I'd rather say 'I worship the Devil' than say 'My favorite baseball team is the New York Yankees'."
Now, this really hurts, coming from an old Staten Island family. But if he's really dead set on using Ben Affleck, then I can deal. If not, I would suggest a change (wow I wrote more about his actor than about his character 8O )
