Why?

Because I hate my job.

I got a full-time position, not at HIDTA, but at the Philosophy Department. And it sucks. You would think that working with philosophers would be fun. No, not really. Not entirely, at least. Mostly, the problem is that my job is, roughly, to know about (and deal with) bureacracy. The high point of my week is when the graduate school loses something I send them.

Now, normally, I wouldn't mind this. Except for the fact that there's nothing really for me to do aside from sort things. A trained monkey could do my job, and I feel like a glorified file clerk. The one thing that I have to look foward to?

Going into business.

Jen, mom, and I are going into business selling period-accurate garb from about the 10th to 18th centuries. Should be fun - even if I handle things like web buliding and all the arrangements, that will be more enjoyable than here. If we can somehow get to the point of living off it. We're also going to flip houses (buy from a tax sale, put right back on the market).

But for the moment, things are stalled.

It doesn't help that I actually have been cleared to officially graduate this semester with both my degrees. Last week, I turned in my last paper; next tuesday, I get to present it (for those interested, I'm presenting on Aristotle and Xenophanes, with a particular focus on their conceptions of god). Maybe I can convince Jim to let me sit in on Presocratics next semester. The high point of the semester, thus far, is getting Jim Lesher to sign a copy of his Xenophanes book for me (yes, I really got a prof to autograph his book. A friend of mine is more geeky. She was jealous).

So, in sum: my academic career is drawn to a sunset, and for the moment, all I have to look foward to is 8 hours of paperwork a day.

The one upside that I have to my paperwork is the possibility that HIDTA may try to steal me back. Let's hope that happens. It'll be more paperwork, but at least it'll be paperwork that actually makes a difference. And I won't be working with people who are afraid of me, either.

Wow. Not much to say to that than "I'm Sorry"

Thanks. Though I want to add:

Bob just called me. Yes, my old HIDTA boss. Who said that he got my app, and even though he already knows all of my answers, and knows me really well, I still have to come in for the interniew, so we can do everything by the book.

Here's to hoping this is a sign. :)

UPDATE: I get the feeling from the interview today that Bob has already made a decision. Partly from the interview, partly from the second stage of bringing in the top 2 people to talk to a number of people (every single one of the other people, I already know - and there's only one who isn't HIDTA Help Desk).

The second round is bringing in the top two people to chat with Shu, Scott, Beiter, Rita, and Vanessa - the last being the queen bitch, and non-help desk. And the interview lasted about 20-25. minutes, with Bob going, "I'm not going to ask you this one" on half the questions.

So yeah. Thinking this is a good sign. It'll be mostly purchasing, but even if I'm just managing accounts, at least at the end of the day I'll be able to say that I'm managing accounts for people doing some good in the world.

Next round will ideally be Thursday or Friday.
