Remember the MSN chatrooms we used to great effect for collabs during most of the life of LABN? Well, I'm sad to say we'll have to find an alternative. I went to the groups to check them out, and this is what I saw:

Quote:
Chat Service will no longer be offered on or after October 16th, 2006. We appreciate your use of the service and apologize for any inconvenience.

All I can say is, their timing sucks.

Oh well. I think a number of us have been directly doing collabs on Microsoft's Messenger.

Yup, it's been ages since we've used the chatrooms for collabing, mostly msn indeed. However, yesterday I was asked to confirm the msn group, I didnt check the chatroom though.

Ah well, fair 'nuff. The only problem with the IM is that the character limit is relatively small. I'm not saying that I write too much, but....

Still, I can live with IM-based collabs.

There's an unofficial extention, actually, called Messenger Plus that you can use. Or you can just do like Mai, and switch to using Trillian, at least for collabs - you don't get all the MSN features, but I think you get a greater character limit.

If you install the Messenger Plus!, you can get up to 1100 characters.

I use GAIM at work and I think it works pretty well considering it merges MSN, Yahoo, AIM/ICQ, IRC, Jabber together into one interface.

It also supports chatrooms and logging and pretty much the stuff you want to use. It has limited voice chat support. It doesnt support the MSN stuff like animated Avatars or those flashdoodle thingies. BUt they are just icing anyways.

I know that most of the RBRP folks sing the virtues of Yahoo chat. WIth GAIM I can watch both with only one client app.
