Real Name: Cole Matthews
Nick Name: Cole
Birth Date & Location: 2nd May 1990 – New York, USA
Position: N/A
Group Affiliation: None, formerly a member of the White Hats, and Sindell Coven.
DESCRIPTION:
When Cole first arrived in LA, he was a short, scrawny, underfed teen with a dirty jean jacket, spikey hair, and a pair of peepers that were as blue as the California sky. That was ‘then’ and during the past 9 years, the boy with the baby blues has grown into a man. Now, at 26, thanks to a life of hunting, training and simply growing up, Cole has filled out, bulked up, and now stands a respectable 5’11, and weighs 175 lbs. His hair has also grown out somewhat, and the dirty jacket has long been traded in for a more adult look.
(Cole is played by Hayden Christensen)
Attitude
The good natured teen who was struggling to fit in and find a family is no more. After losing the majority of people he loved, Cole, consciously or not, began to distance himself from any close, personal relationships. He has since become obsessed with training, growing stronger, and fighting the good fight (alone), to make sure that other people don’t have to go through what he has.
BACKGROUND:
After leaving LA in 2007, Cole spent a year studying at the Sindell Coven. His brief tenure there started off amazingly. Not only had Cole found a place where he fit in, but also, stories of his heroics and field experience had propelled him to a sort of campus legend amongst the younger initiates. But the life of a student was not a privilege that was granted to him for very long.
Deeming the coven a threat to her plans, the Ex-Power-That-Be, Zayn, and her group of Black Hats, took the coven by surprise. Despite his pleas to help, Cole was assigned to lead a group of youngsters to safety while the older witches fought to defend the castle. Though he and some kids survived, the coven was decimated. With no reason to stay in England, Cole traveled back to LA where he rejoined the White Hats in hopes of putting a stop to the mad goddess’ plans.
The world was eventually saved, but not without casualties. Many White Hats lost their lives in the battles that took place, Darian, being one of them. The death of his closest friend sent Cole into a downward spiral that was only augmented by the events that followed: An argument between Alessa and Cole, left a rupture in their friendship that exists to this day. Also, after the epic battle with Zayn, Cole’s friend, Kyle, disappeared from LA. Finally, following the death of her cousin Reah, Cole’s love, Quin, moved back to Australia. Though the two tried to remain close, distance prevailed and it has been over 4 years since the two last spoke.
Now, Cole resides, alone, in a small apartment, living off a sizable Foundation trust-fund, which Tash had set up for him before she died. He spends his time between hunting, alone of course, and increasing his magical abilities.
Powers/Abilities
Spell-Casting. Cole studied witch-craft since his early teens. He then received formal training from the Coven of Sindell, as well as some dark arts lessons from Amanda during the events of season 4. During the 9 years since LABN 1, he has continually honed his skills, and as a result, has grown into quite a formidable mage.
LABN 1
Cole Matthews was born in New York City, single child to Jamie and Kenneth Matthews. For the better part of his years, Cole’s life was like any other kid around, going to school, hanging with friends, basically coasting along in blissful ignorance. The only real trouble in his good life was his short tempered, distant father, and even that was pretty trivial. The peaceful joy ride came to a sudden halt however on Cole’s 13th birthday. While his father was at work (again missing another birthday), Jamie Matthews sat her son down for an “important” talk. Now although Cole figured the “talk” would be nothing more than some parental lecture about something he must have done, he was left stupefied by his mother’s words. His “normal” mother had confessed to him that she was a witch, hailing from a long line of them. If that was shocking enough, his mother proceeded to tell him that she had been diagnosed with a heart tumour earlier in the year, and chances were, she did not have long to live. Cole was left speechless: Witches, spells, magic, heart tumour, death, everything was so overwhelming. Jamie went on to make her son promise never to reveal to his father that she had confessed her magical heritage – such would lead only to disaster.
5 months later, Jamie Matthews passed away peacefully in her bed, leaving Cole to live alone with his volatile father. Before her death however, she had managed to teach her son the basic principles of magic; within only a few months of training, he had showed quite a bit of talent for the mystic arts.
For the first few months after Jamie’s death, everything continued more or less the same, with the exception of his father’s ever growing drinking problem. But as more time passed, Cole’s life was beginning to crumble around him. His school work was suffering, he often fought at school, and his friends were secluding themselves from him and his “problems”. Worse than all this however, was the fact that the young boy’s home was no better than the chaotic world around him. His father had elevated from occasionally bitter and drunk, to being an abusive alcoholic. Things finally exploded when Kenneth (while snooping through Cole’s private belongings) stumbled upon his books on Wicca and witchcraft. He was outraged by his son trafficking with the devil and almost beat poor Cole to death. The boy was now so petrified of his father that when asked at the hospital how he got his injuries, he said he had been mugged and the robber had been overly vicious. While recovering in his hospital room, Cole made the biggest decision of his life. Not wanting to go back to the hellish nightmare that was waiting for him, he sneaked out of the hospital back to his house, gathered what few important belongings he had (a few keepsakes from his mother which Kenneth had not managed to find) and disappeared into the lonely New York night.
Months passed, and Cole finally ended up in LA, where he lived in a filthy run down apartment with a hooker named Demeeta. To his surprise, the police never came looking for him (his father was probably happy the devil worshipper was gone) and he was able to start a new life. Using a little magic, he was able to enrol in a local High school without too many questions. His academic life however was not what it had once been. Cole often missed complete days due to the job he was forced to take to make enough money to survive in expensive LA.
Things continued on this status quo for quite awhile, until the night Cole stumbled on a gang of vampire hitmen preparing to finish a night's work. Using the gifts his mother taught him, the teen managed to save the stranger with the combined efforts of a mysterious women, and a pyschic teen. This day marked another important turning point in his life - It was the day he met Chance and Alessa.
It wasnt long after that the three became friends; the first real friends he had since he had left NewYork. Finally, Cole thought things were finally starting to look up. Despite run-ins with Elder Vampires, a brief bout with drugs, kidnapping mages, and Demon-Queen's from the future, the boy was happy. He had moved out of his disgusting apartment, and was taken with open arms into Poplar Avenue, under the care of the half fae Darian.
Although nothing in his life was conventional, he would have it no other way. He once again had people which he thought of as family, and he was even able to help them fight the battle against evil with his continuously growing skills in magic. All was good in the world again, that was until the day Chance left to Israel, the day Chance left to save countless dimensions from the roaming Titan.
He was left in pain, a pain that had only been surpassed by the death of his mother, years earlier. Of all the people the boy had come to care for, he had always been closest with Chance, and now, fate had taken him away also.
In the aftermath of Chance's leaving, Cole forged a close friendship with Darian before becoming infected with Delancre's Hyde Virus. Under its evil influence, the young teen managed to cause an enormous amount of chaos in a short time. Not only did he siphon away the energy from the likes of Darian, Onyx and Daye, but Cole almost managed to rip a barrier through the cosmos in an attempt to find Chance. His plans were stopped in an epic battle with Kate, where she overcame the young sorcerer, bringing him back to the side of light. Once again under his own influence, Cole worked hard to make amends, and, along with his new friend Kyle Ashton, helped in defeating Delancre and his sinister slayer Anabella.
In the weeks that followed, Cole accepted a prestigious offer by the Coven of Sindell, and, after saying goodbye to those closest to him, left to England in hopes of gaining a better control on his vast powers.
