Hi :) I'm thinking very seriously about submitting a character proposal to join the game, but I wanted to check on a few things before I do.

First, I've read through pretty much all the threads here to get a decent idea of the environments, chronology, etc., but I didn't find anything about where the characters have to be. What I mean is, are the stories going to be limited to the planet of Vogrell?

Second, what is the status of the Jedi Order? I know you have a "no Jedi" rule for characters, but I was just curious as to what their situation is in the chronology you're using -- is Vader's hunt still going on, or has he pretty much wiped them out?

...um... I had a 3rd question, but it has entirely left my mind. In its stead, I shall place a pretty picture ;)

Pretty much... well, sort of. We seem to be adopting an "Epic" and "Adventures" strucutre - during the "Epic" we're dealing specifically with Vorgrell, at least for the first one. We might have other planets show up in the course of the story, but it's kind of our base.

There's a simple reason for this: scope. We've had other games here with larger scopes, and the larger scope can become a bit daunting. By not being based on half a dozen planets, or all around one (note that it looks like most of our action is in Plateu City) we have flexibility to tell more stories, but a small enough scope to have everyone become reasonably connected.

The way I see it is that we're at a point where, as a collective group, the Jedi aren't around. The hunt and the purges are still going on, so people might still see a few Jedi around, but no massive groups gathering.

I like it. Are you another budding graphic artist? :)

Thanks for the answers :) I understand the desire to keep a manageable scope. With things going on everywhere in the galaxy, it gets harder to get enough active players to make each story worthwhile.

As for being a "budding" graphic artist... I've been doing it professionally off and on since `99, so I'd like to think I'm past my budding stage ;)

Oh, I remembered the third question!

Any limitations on what kind of equipment we can give a character? Obviously no lightsabres, no Star Destroyers, etc., but in terms of a spacecraft or a droid...?

From my understanding of it, the general idea is to keep it believable. Droids and ships are fine, but bear in mind that your background will need to support you having them. If you're an urchin who's been scrabbling around the back blocks of Shipwreck you're not likely to have a droid. Not even one you built yourself. Especially if you're still only 9 years old.

On the whole we try to keep characters to a moderate level - anyone too powerful will tend to overbalance the game, so yeah, Star Destroyers are definitely out. But you'll note that a few of the characters submitted so far have ships of varying capabilities. So feel free to add a ship and/or a droid to your collection of items - we'll soon let you know if we think you've gone too over the top. :D

BTW, welcome to the board, Jim. :) All graphic artists, budding or otherwise, are most welcome.

One technique that works (and has been used successfully in other games) is the Posse. You build a fairly straightforward character who has everything that you want in a hero...leadership, looks, ersonality but you give him only the basic stuff he needs...say a Snub fighter.

Then you give him a Posse of NPCs who fill in the gaps. A gunner-co-pilot who is a talented gambler. A girlfriend who is an officer working for the Empire. A friend who is a smuggler, and so on.

You can't claim exclusive use of these guys but they color our universe...and as your friends they give you access to a lot of things you might not be able to cram into your character by himself.

In making characters like this you will find yourself adding depth to your character. How did he meet these people? What draws them together? What drives them apart? What is the balance in the relationship? The stresses? That sort of thing.

It benefits everyone and adds depth to your character AND our setting. Hope this helps.

Thanks everyone. Don't worry, I'll keep it realistic... well, "realistic" is kinda relative, I guess. This is Star Wars, after all ;) I changed my username -- my other name was just out of habit, since that's what I go by on all the graphics and art communities I'm a member of.

Roguenroll -- the background was Terragen, the ships were rendered in Poser, then everything was fixed up in Photoshop. I use Poser a lot (can't organic model to save my life), as well as Terragen, some Animation Master and AMAPI and I just recently bought Shade, so I'm trying to get going with it, too.

Welcome Jim The other name is fine, we just tend to remember both. Rogenroll is Greg f'rinstance. We tend to refer to each other by name rather then screenname. We are unique that way.

Part of it ties back to the original orgainization of the board where we used our character names for screennames. But we've also otten pretty chummy off-board by orgainizing several get-togethers around the world.

I notice you say you are from Canada but have a Scottish flag on your profile...A Scot in Canada or a Canadian in Scotland?
If you are a scot, you should say 'hi' to Jamie our resident Highlander.

Sure, Jim. You can use the OrcaDesignStudios username if you want. I was just asking for your name since that other one sounds rather impersonal, and we prefer calling each other by our real names here.

We'll just call you Jim from now on :P And Welcome again!

Editing here: Silly me, you gave us your name in your fist post!!

The username really makes no difference to me, so I changed it to make things easier for everyone else :)

And I'm a Canadian living in Canada, but with a strong appreciation of his Scottish roots :drinking:

haha, I was born in canada, lived in U.S. all my life, naturalized U.S. now, and proud of his, english :drinking: & scottish :drinking: roots.

cheers
