She enjoys working with children and went into psychology to follow in her father’s footsteps.
Leslie Summerland grew up at the Summerland Institute for Unique and Gifted Youngsters. Her father, Jason Summerland, was a dedicated child psychologist who developed an interest in metahumans early on in his career. Using his own money, and the resources of a few wealthy clients, Jason set up the Summerland Institute as a place where metahuman youths could go and feel safe and secure away from the prying eyes of a judgemental and hostile public. The Institute was established in 1968 and has been privately funded by the parents of “Unique and Gifted Youngsters” ever since.
Leslie met RJ Munroe when he was brought to the Institute as a young boy. When RJ arrived at Summerland in 1985, Leslie was nearly 13 years old. She felt drawn to the quiet, somber little boy that RJ had been. On the brink of womanhood, she felt both a need to protect and care for the boy and a strange attraction to the dark, dangerous power RJ possessed. From the time of his arrival until Leslie left for college, she and RJ were practically inseparable.
When Leslie came back to Summerland years later with her doctorate, she found RJ surprisingly still there. Leslie was a woman by then fully. She was 24 years old, and RJ was only 16, yet she was once again drawn to the boy. Leslie took over RJ’s case personally not long after taking a permanent position at the Institute. RJ had long been a favorite of her father’s, and Leslie knew that Jason had spent many years helping RJ to try and learn to use his powers in a beneficial way. She also knew that RJ often despaired of ever being able to live with his unusual abilities. Leslie was very sympathetic to RJ’s plight and had strong feelings for the boy she’d grown up with.
Despite their age difference, even after Leslie came back, she and RJ found much in common to speak of and share. RJ opened up to her during their private sessions over the course of the first few months that she was treating him. He told her of his feelings of resentment towards his parents and the sister he’d never met, and he also told her of his growing feeling of isolation from everyone and everything. RJ had great difficulty maintainting control over his abilities when he grew excited or stressed.
RJ was on the verge of manhood himself, and felt stirrings and urges only natural to a boy his age. Leslie spent a lot of time working with him and he grew to feel very strongly for her. Finally, one night, while they were together, RJ could no longer control his desire for the lovely doctor. He kissed her, and much to both their surprise, Leslie did not resist, but rather found herself fully enjoying the embrace.
After the start of their affair, Leslie wrestled with her conscience. She is RJ’s doctor and far older than him, but she is also deeply in love with the young man. Because of her feelings, she is unable to resist being with him, despite how it might look to others. She and RJ have been carrying on their affair for years, under the noses of the other doctors and staff of the Institute. If their relationship were to come to light, she would most likely lose her job. Leslie is aware of this, but she is simply unable to stop herself.
