hehehe, amid all this fanboy joy over the current JLA/Avengers crossover by the supreme talents of Kurt Busiek and George Perez (a mini-series really really definitely worth picking up...hehehe, especially for the scene where Bruce, disobeying his own orders not to interfere in the Marvel U takes out the Punisher like the little schoolgirl that he is and wipes the alleys of NYC with it) and the endless debates everywhere about who's better...soooooo, in the most exciting class ever of intermediate cal, i came up with a little tourney pitting the heroes...and villains (yes, i included 2 wildcards on each side) first against one another and then against the opposite universes...
the characters are perhaps a little biased meaning that out of 16 (for each universe) i have obviously left out some characters that people might have a special affinity for...on the bright side, i didnt include Azrael, Jason Blood, or Black Canary :P
rather than put up a poll, cuz the brackets are too big and there wouldnt be space for people to give a reason if they want (thats the fun part)...
the brackets were picked randomly and i swear that the last DC bracket WAS picked randomly (i put the names down on pieces of paper and picked them out of my pencil case, seeing as i didnt have a hat)...
so here goes...
oh yeah, how it works...each universe has 16 players, thus 8 fights...after the first round, only 8 survive who go onto the second round...the second round is where they crossover against their opposite universe players...eg Superman against the Hulk and not Superman against a DC player, vice-versa...
ill leave this up for about a week or so, maybe 2 depending on how many people reply...trust me, this is really fun (have done it among friends, @ the comic shop, and theres always a him vs. him thread on the DC boards), u would not believe how childish, petty and stubborn people can be :P
oh yeah, again, i forgot...when picking a winner take into account weaknesses (yes, superman has a few besides green kryptonite), intelligence, fighting skills, resources, etc.
after the two weeks or so (or if everyone answered are up) then round 2 (selecting brackets and all) will start...

Okay, you'll have to forgive me in advance, because I don't know all the powers of all these characters, especially the marvel ones, but bear with me.
DC
1. Nightwing- I don't know all that much about plas extcept for the obvious fact that he can stretch like plastic... but it just seems like Nightwing can adapt to whoever he fights (as can Batman) so I voted for him.
2. Wonder Woman- The Amazon Princess vs. the alien girl.... While I'm all for Super Girl, you don't mess with sombody who has the power of the gods by her side. And a magic lasso to boot....
3. Superman- He he. Is this even a contest? Superman can go nearly as fast as the Flash, but he has about a thousand million other powers (seriously). This one goes to the kryptonian...
4. Captain Marvel- I seriously wanted to go with my girl Cassie on this one but... let's face it, she might be the best fighter in the DCU but that only goes when she's fighting normal humans. Sombody like Captain Marvel is a little out of her league.
5. Martian Manhunter- Another free-bee. That is, if Lex is just fighting MM 1 on 1 and doesn't have time to prepare sometime like a big bomb or whatever the President can do. Mantian Manhunter has actual powers, so he wins.
6. Green Lantern- I like Hawkman, but GL is just to powerful. I mean, he has the most powerful weapon in the universe for crying out loud!
7. Green Arrow- Sure Aquaman may be king of the seas (or at least was...), but he can't survive all that long out of water. Thus, GA waits for him on land and then keeps him there when he comes out. Plus, GA has the advantage of having a projectile weapon that she can shoot with deadly accuracy, so he wins.
8. Batman- Do I even need to comment on this one?
Marvel
1. Wolverine- Don't know much about Punisher. I'm sure he's strong (or at least it sounds that way), but... this guy has adamantium claws!!!!! Adamantium!!! Which is apparently the strongest metal in the marvel universe!!! Plus, Logan has a better sense of smell and hearing, putting him at an advantage.
2. Mr. Fantastic- Don't know much about Mr. F, but I can't stand Namor. I'll look Mr. F up and then edit this if I would change my choice.
3. Silver Surfer- In DC vs. Marvel, SS beat GL. Therefore, I'm thinking that SS would be Thor, who nearly lost to Captain Marvel.
4. Hulk- From what I understand, Hulk gets stronger as he gets more damage because he becomes angrier. Thusly, CA's attacks would only fuel Hulk. Of course, CA is a force to be reaconed with, but the Hulk is... well... the Hulk!!
5. Venom- Venom... can beat Spiderman at times. And I don't think Nick Fury can (but then again I'm not reall familiar with the character). therefore, Venom beats Nick.
6. Iron Man- Kingpin vs. a man of metal... Iron Man all the way.
7. Cyclops- Funny... both of these characters have probelms with thier eyes... but considering Daredevil is blind, that puts him at an immidiate disadvantage. Of course, this hasn't stopped him all that much in that past, but would he be able to sense an optic blast coming? I don't know, but I voted for Cyclops in case he can't (plus, I'm more familliar with Scott)
8. Spiderman- I' m going to look up DR. Strange and change this when I find out who he is.

5. Martian Manhunter can shapeshift, invade minds and ranks in the top 3 in the DCU in sheer power, not to mention he can phase into matter...but Lex knows that MM's weakness is fire...one of his Lexcorp battlesuits would do the trick...
6. Green Lantern...emerald power ring...most powerful weapon in the DCU...nuff said
7. I love Arthur, but for the same reasons Mike mentioned, ill go with Ollie, Green Arrow

3. Ya ya, SS is the cosmic being, much as i hate to say it, the power of the Odin wont protect Thor
4. Cap would kick the shit of the Hulk...hes wickedly agile and his shield is insanely potent as a weapon, not to mention Cap is an expert shot
5. Venom would still match up to Fury's arsenal of weapons and SHIELD agents
6. Kingpin would take to long to order people to take out Iron Man...Iron Man would have some gadget to take him out
7. Daredevil...here's the reason...his heightened senses enable him to remain a step ahead of bonehead summers, he can hear summers' hearbeat and can sense the vibration of his optic blast...also, the boyscout will hesitate to take out DD< whereas, DD wouldnt....once DD knocks off Scott's visor with his cane, he's easy pickings...btw, DD would use any martial art he knows and kick the crap out of cyclops

Just thought I'd take the liberty of answering some of these question...
Batgirl was commissoner Gordon's daughter (well... adopted neice actually.). However, during the killing Joker, when the Joker wanted to get at Batman by hurting those around him, he shot Barbara and paralyzed her, so she's in a wheelchair now. She became Oracle, who uses a big computer and other such technology to help batman trace people, intercept 911 calls, analyze stuff, etc. In a way, she's more valuable to him this way...
Now, Cassie Cain came about during No Mand's Land (In case you don't know, NML was after Gotham got hit by a big earthquake that pretty much destroyed it, and instead of rebuilding it, the Gov't told everybody to get out, and then they blew up the bridges so nobody could get in... or out).
Cassandra is the daughter of master assasin David Cain, who trained her to fight. He didn't even teach her to talk (although one would figure that she would learn on her own...), so she couldn't. Anyway, she was in Gotham during no mans land and she became Batgirl... I haven't read the whole thing so I don't know exactly how. She is the best fighter in the DC univerce though, because she knows what the person is going to do next becasue she was trained from birth to read people's movements. She can also talk now though, because a meta-human used his power to arrange her thoughts into words.
Ummm... he's an alien. And I think he's also a detective. He can shape-shift, as well as turn invisible and go through stuff. His big weakness if fire apparently... and he's green.
Mr. Fantastic is the leader of the fantastic four (I think). I think his power is like Plastic Man's... he can stretch... but I'm not sure.
Namor is like a marvel version of Aquaman, and I think he was one of the first marvel heroes, if not the first (but I could be wrong).
Venom is a Spider-man enemy... he's black (er... not black as in skin color. Black as in he's completely black with a little white. I think. At least that's the version I remember from the show. I think he's also... liquidy, but I don't read comics so I'm just trying to remember from the show).
Nick Fury... isn't he the head of some organization or another? I know he appears in X-men evolution every once in a while...

and ur right on martian manhunter aka j'onn j'onzz...he first appeared in Detective Comics taking the form of John Jones, a recently deceased detective...i forget which issue recently (i think JLA) but Superman was said to be afraid of Manhunter's strength...he really ranks up there along Big Blue and Capt. Marvel in terms of sheer strength in the DCU
and iron man is tony stark...he is kind of a marvel version of bruce wayne, ie billionaire playboy who is insanely intelligent and makes things (gadgets and stuff), the only difference is that stark got attacked and needed a suit to keep himself alive (@ least thats how i remember it from a kid)

I am going to call the longshot and say Nightwing. Bats taught our man Dick well and while Wolfie has logged many more combat hours than the ward of Bruce Wayne he has not had the benefit of the Dark Knights tutelage. I think the "thinking man's" game will turn this tide.

Wonder Woman. Stark is a brilliant man, but he is not very spontaneous, and Wonder Woman is the kind of a girl sho thinks on her feet. Her resourcefulness would probably make this a rare Brawl vs Brains takedown (but we love her for her Mind, right boys?)
