How much would you pay for Late Night Games?
Hi Gang!
Remember me? Jog your memory. Anyway, even though I contribute exactly 0% to this board (currently), I do read postings as often as I can get around to them. I would be more than happy to drop my check in the mail today, as I am sure most everyone would. Take care everyone and keep up the great writing!
Luv from moi!

Another server option is Galaxynet... I've been using IRC for years... It takes a little getting use to but once we're up and running, it's a breeze. :) As for the donation bit, I wouldn't mind I guess if it was absolutely compulsory... But if there are 'free' options, I'd much prefer those. Heh heh...

Lunarnet as an IRC server is definately an option. I don't remember how big their capacity is. Or if we run our own server, then at least trying to become a part of their network.
There is software out there I know for running your own server which can actually be run off of your own PC. The problem with this being that if the host suffers a disconnect....well,we all do.
Of course, we can always register a room on something like, oh I don't know, DALnet and have a *very* good chance of still having a server.

IRC is an option. But since I use both a computer at work, and two at home and even from other countries, I'd prefer (but am not totally stuck on) an all-in-one solution.
The only real problem I have with IRC is that we are still stuck with the server problem. Specifically it has to run on someone else's. While there are plenty of free places, they aren't all free...and some of them are flaky as hell. However IRC would mean we could run an on-the-site java based client. That way no-one would have to download or install anything.
I explored using Jabber (which is what yahoo chat and the mac iChat are built with) which is an opensource solution but I had disappointing results when it came to implementation. I could look into running our own IRC server, I suppose...
Keep talking folks, all the ideas are helping me see what we can do.

Why not use IRC? mIRC (the client) is free and easy to use even for people who've never used it before. You can have as many channels (rooms) as you want ect... Its just a matter of finding the right irc.network... I figure gamesurge would be good since the whole premise of the network is for use by gamers.
The only problem is that you have to download something. But at least its free :D
But regardless id be happy to pay if it ment we had a good stable always avaiable chat room.

Yes that will do for now, but you only get ONE chatroom (the same problem as before) and you are then beholden to Microsoft to keep it available for free... The MS Chat thing always has interrupting ads too. I like the MSN interface (except it does not support my Mac).
I find that more than a little annoying.
The Freeserve folks said they would "keep their chatrooms open" and they will. Thats why they were such a good choice. I just didn't expect them to close their private chat stuff. And then there was the bizzarre some can paste and some can't thing.
I am looking into more permanant solution (either a software licence or a long-term provider) that we can have some control over. No ads. Copy and Paste capabilities. Colors. Multiple Private Rooms, and messaging. No compromises if I can help it. It will take time to get it all worked out to 100% satisfaction.
Besides,if it comes to brass tacks, I will pay for it all myself if I the only permanant solution I can come up with is a cash solution. I will keep everyone abreast of developments.

I'm sure that I could squeeze a few dollars out too, and I do feel like I would like to help offset whatever costs there are, so just let me know what you need and when, Dave. This site is important to me and I feel well worth the money. Thanks.

Ok well the chatroom situation could well be sorted then.
However I'm more than willing to pay a few dollars a month or even a year 'subscription' either way I can easily afford to make a donation. So next time a cost comes up Dave let me know...

Actually Dave, Ally set up a LABN group in msn which freakily does allow us to use MSN Chat like we did before, all it requires is that all LABN members sign up to the group and that's that. There don't appear to be any major problems and it's free (always a bonus)

Would You Pay?
Beacsue of the chatroom situation, I have explored a number of free options and have found a few pay options. Some of them aren't very expensive, but they do have a cost involved. An example is the company that I used for our current (temporary) chatroom. They charge a $30 setup and $99 a year ($129 charged once).
With about 20 members that would be a contribution of about $10 each and an upkeep charge of $8 a year (assuming that some of you don''t pay at all because of whatever reason).
I am not going to make you pay to play. Ever. But I do want to feel out some of the possibilities of getting a donation system and perhaps upgrading some of our facilities to included licencing software (like chat software) or even prizes for contests and things.
So please take the poll, and give me your opinion.
