cover n a recording of a song that was first recorded or made popular by somebody else; "they made a cover of a Beatles' song" [syn: cover version, cover song]
Here is how it works. I name a song and artist and then I name ANOTHER artist who I would like to hear do that song. It should probably be someone you'd expect to do that song...
For Example:
Pat Benetar's "Heartbreaker" by Green Day
Then the next person names a song by the LAST artist and picks a new cover artist for it.
For Example:
Green Day's "Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)" by Allison Kraus
And so on...
Try not to use covers that have been made already and try to keep the artists fairly mainstream...BECAUSE if you don't recognise the artist it'll be useful to be able to find music by them online to get a sense of style so that you can name the next artist.
Bonus points (awarded by the last player who posted) if you manage to cross genres (as I did above - Green Day is Pop/Rock and Allison Kraus is country/bluegrass)
Thems the rule...first post follows.

"Mainstream", huh? Who the hell are EMF? Who the hell are Cake?? I've never heard of these guys... :?

The Cover Game
Ha! Glad I'm not the only one who drew a blank at those two. 8O

I can't be the only person on this board who has heard of Cake, fer Christsakes.
http://music.yahoo.com/ar-294061-bio--Cake
There's the bio. Their latest album (2001) was #13 on the US charts. They had a #1 hit (The Distance) in 1997.
EMF was a one-hit-wonder. Their single "Unbeleivable" was #6 on the top ten pop hits for 1991. They are a English band from Manchester. Their record was an international hit conquering the UK and US charts.
It that isn't the definition of "mainstream" then this game is unplayable.
The Cover Game
I haven't heard of either of them either, but that shouldn't be really surprising. :)
Though listening to the MP3, I can recognise "Unbelievable," but would have never known who did it. It's been used in enough soundtracks. Cake, though... still drawing a blank.
Of course, part of the problem is probably that, from what I know of everyone's music tastes, we don't have a lot of "mainstream" stuff (if you take chart dominating as the definition of mainstream) in our repetroires. We'd much rather listen to good music made to sound good, rather than the popular bands trying to create things that will out-sell everyone else.
The Cover Game
To be fair to Dave, I cannot possibly play this game. period. I'm terrible at music, even more at music in English, even if I've heard it all my life. And, no. I dont think I ever heard 'Unbelievable'.
I was just laughing at Heather and Lou's round eyes.

I just subjected myself to a full rendition of "The Distance" by Cake and I can see why I've never heard of them. The lead "singer" (for lack of a better term) does that thing that I generally can't stand at all - all he does is speak the lyrics while the rest of the band just does the same old guitar riff over and over.
So, given that there's really no melody line at all to speak of, I think the next selection in this game should be:
"The Distance" by Cake as performed by Uncle Kracker.
The Cover Game
Ah, someone I've heard of
"Follow Me" by Uncle Kracker as performed by Franz Ferdinand
The Cover Game
Franz Ferdinad? Isn't that the guy who was the dictator of Spain during World War II?
Oh... wait... that was Franco.

I hagve been ruminating on this for more than a day and have only been able to think of other hip-hip artists to do Missy's stuff. And I didn't want to go with something like Christine Aguilera (who has had singles produced by Missy Elliott and so as a result had hints of her in her sound). So I went looking for something different.
"We Run This" by Missy Elliot as performed by Tom Jones
If he could do "Kiss" by Prince he could do justice to this song. In fact I think I heard a sample of his voice in the mix.
You can hear Missy Elliott's stuff here: http://www.missy-elliott.com (use the player in the upper right hand corner of the page to change the song)
